Polish patriot and composer Frédéric Chopin (Cornel Wilde) is one of the 19th century's most famous musicians, whose love of country and devotion to his legendary music are threatened by his passionate affair with novelist George Sand (Merle Oberon) and his rivalry with mentor Josef Elsner (Paul Muni). Indefensible as either art or history, Charles Vidor's Chopin biopic is the absolute textbook definition of kitsch. Go to Full Review

steve d 07/22/2020 You may forget the film exists while it is still in the player. See more 01/22/2020 Very dated, historically inaccurate, hard to sit through now. I guess so many actors were in service by the end of WWII that it was hard to drum up 5 quality performances for Oscar. Aside from being a new heart throb, there is no reason Cornel Wilde deserved a nomination for his secondary role and merely OK performance. Nice music though. See more 05/14/2016 Mixed feelings. I love the story of genius (Chopin) and especially the involvement of a second genius (Lizst). There is some wonderful music (although some Chopin, I must admit, I find forced). On the other hand it has the typical problem of old movies: weak acting, conspicuous dramatic devices. As interesting and inspiring as the story would be if there was truth to it, it is apparently all fiction - and I could feel that while watching. Slight thumbs down overall. 4.8 out of 10 See more 11/13/2015 interesting bio-pic of sorts d/k how historically accurate it is though. See more 09/09/2014 "A Song to Remember" is supposed to be the life of Chopin but in fact, very little in it is historically accurate. It's still a beautiful, emotional, and sumptuous movie, filled with the heavenly music of Chopin. See more 03/31/2014 Muni made an art out of trying to play everyone. In some cases he pulls it off. In this case he does a disservice to Chopin's mentor and ultimately Chopin himself with a tepid performance. See more Read all reviews
