Audience Member Predates UN CHIEN. Forget the eye-slicing, this is proto-surrealist cinema at its most vibrant and youthful. People hesitant of Renoir's sense of experimentation and innovation only need to witness this tiny piece of forgotten material. In its 20 minutes, they will discover a giddy willingness to explore the capabilities of cinema as well as a refusal of the rules. Renoir's career is not generally explored in terms of revolution. This ridiculous gem illustrates how it is high time he be evaluated. 74 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Predates UN CHIEN. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a very strange short, completely silent film, about a blacked-up black man who travels in a spaceship from Africa to the unknown land of France. There he meets Jean Renoir's wife who dances for him. He realises that she is not a savage and is taught the Charleston by her. I think it was taking the mickey of colonial attitudes to 'savage' Africa - I don't know why Johnny Huggins had to black himself up mnistrel-style, or what the significance of the man in a monkey suit was. The film was never released - I'm sure it wouldn't have got past the censors because of Hessling's limited clothing and suggestive dancing, Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Not as Funny as the first Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member 2028, a civilized, hi-tech African man travels to an unknown land "Europe" where he meets an infatigable, tribal white female who captures him, refuses to eat him due to his skin color, then teaches him how to dance. This short piece cleverly parodies our history, mirroring and fusing the past and future into an unconventional comedy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
