Jacob B This movie's okay, if a bit of a fever dream. It says a lot that the best scene in the movie has practically little relevance to the plot with a clearly CGI robot that looks okay on its own but clashes hard with the 2D animation with zero effort made to try to have it blend in with the rest of the environment using cel-shading or a similar technique. The Fearless Four does have a surprisingly good soundtrack, likeable characters and at least the plot was trying to do something different rather than just imitate the Disney Renaissance-era movies but the animal rights messages are very heavy-handed, the animation looks decent in stills but in motion places a weird emphasis on close-ups (it's not incompetent but it definitely feels like an off-brand Disney/Don Bluth - it is an interesting touch that most of the CGI assets are antagonistic in nature, suggesting that it was a stylistic choice) and the pacing isn't the best, especially once our heroes arrive to where the evil sausage factory is located. Also, I can't help but feel that the film loses some of its edge with scenes from the original German production being cut from the English dub. To the film's credit, you never truly get the feeling that something's missing for the most part in this version but if Disney could get away with showing alcohol in Beauty and the Beast, surely this film's epilogue could've been retained. Just colour it differently to look less alcoholic, like what dubbed anime was doing, and at least it'd feel like the movie had a proper ending. Though I don't think anybody's going to be missing that scene where a normal-looking cat is seductive towards one of the villains anytime soon due to the implications of bestiality. Guess whoever had the tickle-torture machine scene downplayed in the English dub was ahead of their time since this film came out before the birth of DeviantArt, which would be known for being the place to go for weird fetishes (I actually think I saw a frame from this film on that site one time). All in all, a passable piece of German animation that opted to do something other than pretend to be Disney but isn't good enough to qualify as a truly underrated movie on the same level as The Iron Giant. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Ryan D Most of the props of this movie go to the team behind the music production. The song cast are powerhouses in their own right and let down by the weak visual storytelling. Still, this is an enjoyable movie that would have seen greater success if marketed to the right audience. There’s a simple storyline here about not being taken advantage of and sticking together as friends. Put it on and close your eyes for an auditory treat. I imagine during his collab on Tarzan, Phil Collins told his team to hold his hat after seeing how hard they went on this. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review MovieFan 1 I really love it!
