Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Liam D Not as insane as the title This action is shlocky fun that any classic cinefile will like Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/21 Full Review Audience Member A Masterpiece of Kung Fu Movie a very extraodinary Movie about a Mad Mandschu Emperor who overrule the Chinese and create a Special Unit who hunt down the Chinese and kill them with Flying Guillotine which is very violent that much Head's get chopped off in this Film one of this Guards are getting desillusioned and don't want to kill People any more and fall in Love with a Chinese Girl but there is no Retreat of this Unit so they hunt him. He flee with his Wife to a Farm and get's a Farmer but they found him so he must kill all of them. A Unorthodox Story, Bounding Style, Bombastic Music and High Skilled Martial Arts and lot of Dark Comedy make this Movie to a Pure Pleasure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member The Flying Guillotine is a badass weapon. This a good entry in the Shaw catalog just don't expect it to be a mother-fucker like Master of the Flying Guillotine. There's just not enough 'special' touches like a kickass villain, a smoking score & a raging climax to put it on that level. If your a fan of the genre though it's quite enjoyable though even if it's a bit long. I guess that it had to be though as it's really a 4 part movie as you get the origin of the weapon, the training, the assassinations & then the man hunt for Mau Tang who has descensioned from the Emperor. Some of it could have been thinned down a bit or maybe saved for the sequel but all in all a good time. Very interested to see what part 2 has to offer Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A classic Shaw Brothers movie about an Emperor who recruits a team of assassins to use a new deadly weapon - a flying guillotine that can take a man's head off at a 100 yards!! One man, Ma Teng discovers treachery and greed amongst the team so he escapes only for the Emperor to order the team to take him out. Whilst on the run, Ma starts a new life with his wife and baby son but how long can he hide before somebody finds out where he lives? One of the most famous Shaw Brothers movie which went on to have a couple of sequels. This isn't your typical kung-fu movie, it's more like a horror with some kung-fu overtones. There's an atmosphere of dread in the storyline as once the flying guillotine is locked in on it's unfortunate victim there's basically no escape. This movie pays more attention to plot, character interaction, and drama than your usual old-school HK movie. The violence level is high, although there isnâ(TM)t that much blood. Tons of people are beheaded, and usually all we see is the corpse flopping around afterwards, legs kicking spasmodically. Itâ(TM)s pure camp fun. The acting is quite good and it's an exciting movie. I definitely loved it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Easily one of the best flying guillotine movies. A young plays Chen Tai Kuan plays Mau Tang, an imperial soldier who becomes the best with the flying guillotine. When one of his friends is killed by order of the Emperor, he is betrayed by everyone and hunted. The movie's best moment is when Mau Tang meets a street performer who helps him out. Mau is ambushed by two men, but the street performer sings loudly to cover the fighting. The fall in love and have a child, bringing a nice sense of tension and primal urge to protect his family. The final battle is really something. Mau Tang defeats two former comrades with a steel umbrella, to combat their flying guillotines. Then he faces the rest in a tense and action packed duel of flying guillotines. With character development and a better plot, The Flying Guillotine is one of the Shaw Brothers finest films.
