In 1947, after the death of her husband, Clara (Gila Almagor) and her Egyptian family settle into a crowded one-room apartment in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her son, Sami (Ophir Shalhin), is bright and has a fondness for reading, but is so upset over his mother working as a maid that he drops put of school to find factory work and help support the family. He soon finds himself swept up in a strike and embraces his newfound role as an activist, even though it could mean arrest by British police.

Audience Member A very fresh and stimulating Israel film about a young boy coming of age, discovering love, living in a complex family situation and watching the adult around him, as well as entering into social and political action. The actors are wonderful. The mix of languages in the film is also astonishing (Arabic, Ladino, Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish), giving a vivid kaleidoscope of what the language situation was at the beginning of the State of Israel. The other hero is Clara, Sami's mother, a young widow who has devoted all her life to feeding her four children, and who is hesitating between a charming flirtatious Egyptian and an all too serious Ashkenazi pretender. In the backgrounds, there is politics, war, with the Irgoun throwing terrorist attacks and being persecuted by the British, while the Israeli independence war coming up.
