As with “Marriage Story” and “Frances Ha,” Baumbach showcases his nonpareil savvy for exhibiting truths of human nature within everyday simplicity and pugnacious family dynamics. The purity of his screenplays consistently seems to get the best out of his actors too: Sandler, Stiller and Hoffman all give some of their best work here.

It's really difficult to understand why this movie was ever produced. For the sake of the actors, why have they decided to play a part in such a boring movie I don't really know. Comedy, is it? Drama, is it? For 90% or the movie I hoped the TV would break. Atrocious time in front of the TV. Good acting doesn't hide the uselessness of this movie.

The intense, witty, sincere, realistic and smart dialogues were both the highlight and the pitfall of this movie - there was just too much of it. Also, given that 2 of the protagonists are such well-known comedians (Stiller and Sandler), it was almost as if there should have been a comedy where there was a veritable family drama.

Not exactly new territory for Baumbach but I appreciate that while his character remain insufferable, his own cruelty as a writer seems to have subsided. We see this family as deeply flawed people not simply monsters.
