The intense, witty, sincere, realistic and smart dialogues were both the highlight and the pitfall of this movie - there was just too much of it. Also, given that 2 of the protagonists are such well-known comedians (Stiller and Sandler), it was almost as if there should have been a comedy where there was a veritable family drama.

Not exactly new territory for Baumbach but I appreciate that while his character remain insufferable, his own cruelty as a writer seems to have subsided. We see this family as deeply flawed people not simply monsters.

Baumbach again proves to be a master storyteller with this portrait of a fractured family and it's eccentric members. Well cast (Hoffman is fantastic, and one of Sandler's best roles).

Ultimately, the great strengths of The Meyerowitz Stories are the performances. Beyond that, Baumbach's crafted an attractive, gently funny family study, but not one that demands to be seen in a theatre.
