Fernando F. Croce Slant Magazine Michael Haneke could be cinema’s Debbie Downer, if only he had any sense of humor. Mason M Though at times, this film could seem a bit tedious, it is a haunting and shocking film that won't be leaving my mind anytime soon. Handle always finds a new way to impress me in his films, and this film was so skillfully crafted that, without a plot or any insight into the characters, I could tell exactly what they were thinking. The Seventh Continent also uses haunting long takes and pauses that kept me intrigued at even the most boring moments and a second half that builds in one of the most terrifying ways imaginable as we start to understand what's happening. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Patricia W This film was a complete waste of time.No explanation. No insights.Nothing.This film just sits there. The couples motivations are never revealed. Why bother? I've forgotten this flick already. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review Dave S The Schobers, an Austrian family of three, live mundane lives, apparently consumed by the repetitive nature of their daily existence and deadened by the consumer culture in which they live. As time passes over a period of three years, they realize that there is only one viable option – escape. Made early in the career of director Michael Haneke, The Seventh Continent set the table for what was to come, both stylistically and thematically. Filled with stark images, countless cuts to black, uncomfortably long takes, stunted dialogue, and familiar Haneke themes, it's a movie that will be appreciated by many, reviled by an equal number, and forgotten by none.
