When their father passes away, four grown, world-weary siblings return to their childhood home and are requested -- with an admonition -- to stay there together for a week, along with their free-speaking mother (Jane Fonda) and a collection of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. As the brothers and sisters re-examine their shared history and the status of each tattered relationship among those who know and love them best, they reconnect in hysterically funny and emotionally significant ways.

Critics Consensus

This Is Where I Leave You has its moments, but given the amount of talent assembled onscreen, the rather pedestrian results can't help but feel like a letdown.

It speaks volumes about the current shortage of this type of project that so many talented people were willing to attach themselves to a picture as subpar as this one. Go to Full Review

We get set piece after set piece, character moment after character moment, with few of them doing more than letting characters talk about themselves and tell each other things that we're not yet sure we believe. Go to Full Review

There are a few enjoyable moments, with Fey and Fonda making you wish they had a movie of their own, but sadly the narrative is more concerned with the boys, whose relationship crises are altogether more formulaic and less interesting. Go to Full Review

Regardless of how formulaic these sitcom situations prove to be, and how everything conveniently works out for most of the characters, it's a mildly watchable, R-rated, dysfunctional family comedy. Go to Full Review

[An] immensely underseen indie drama about four children returning home as adults when their father dies. This one is such a gem. Go to Full Review

The cast comes together as a unit and even though the movie veers toward easy sentimentality when an edgier approach might have been more realistic, the players are the ties that bind the family and this movie together. Go to Full Review

bermanium b Oct 24 Wow What a disappointment with the extensive cast like that you would have thought you got something a lot more. The script was awful. The acting was great built up expectations, but nothing really happened. That I could say was substantial, big fart movie. Don't recommend it. Don't waste your time. Bateman and Fey are wonderful and Drover lights up the screen (even though it’s a little unbelievable that he’s the ‘baby’ brother). The story is sad, funny, touching but not overly dramatic. true yo familial messy relationships. See more Michael D Jul 25 I could listen to Jason Bateman and Tina Fey read a shopping list, but while the premise was interesting, it failed to follow through with it. The actors did what they could, but the characters were simple and unconflicted. When characters too easily apologize for their own mistakes, I can only conclude that the character development in the book was left on the cutting room floor. It's like telling just the punch line of a joke without the setup. Once again, I'm reminded that I should look at reviews before spending my money on a Prime rental. See more Michael B Jun 15 I don't know why so many people and critics didn't like this movie, I found it quite enjoyable. It's different, it's got some very funny moments and some touching bits. Sure, some of the characters are not particularly likeable, but doesn't that accurately reflect life? See more Lawrence R May 12 I liked this film. Not too lighthearted, not overly dramatic, just a good story told by talented actors with a bit of humor thrown in.
