Critics Consensus

Vivarium may confound almost as often as it intrigues, but this well-acted sci-fi/horror hybrid has interesting ideas -- and explores them with style.

Vivarium's purgatory is more clear-cut, though that somehow doesn't make it any less mysterious... Go to Full Review

The story comes to a flawless punchline at almost exactly 27 minutes. The snag is that Vivarium has more than an hour still to run... Go to Full Review

Domesticity sucks the life out of everyone. But it's thin thematic reward for seeing the wheels behind this performer's eyes grind to a halt. Go to Full Review

Starting with its pivotal opening sequence of a cuckoo pushing out hatchlings from their nest to claim it as its own, Lorcan Finnegan’s feature knows exactly what it’s doing and it uses every tool at its disposal to deliver us to a devastating conclusion. Go to Full Review

Even though the two tried, they couldn't overcome a script that feels both apparent and undercooked. A good idea or two can only get you so far it seems. Go to Full Review

Vivarium is a surprising and unique film that inspires reflection on the nature of reality and the struggle for freedom in an increasingly homogeneous and controlled world. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

VITALII H @freakynickison 4d It had the potential but fell short. A young couple went to a property viewing but suddenly the agent that showed them the house completely vanished. Trapped in the neighborhood with completely identical houses they simply can’t leave. This movie seems unfinished and uninspired especially at the end. I wish creators just gave us something instead we were left with nothing but speculations as to wtf was it. Simply dumb. See more Jourdan @JourdanSteezy 6d Despite the negative user reviews by people who need their hands held to understand a movie, I thought it was very well done. The film is not so much plot focused as it is focused on manipulating the viewers emotions through the liminal aesthetic and eerie dread conveyed by the characters. The writer does not give you a lot of information, giving the viewer space to write their own hypothesis and conclusions. My interpretation is that there is an alien species using this “neighborhood” to lure couples into this home and use quickly aging “children” to learn from the couples. As is shown in the end of the film, this is an endless cycle where each human’s reaction to the experience defers from the others. This species uses this isolation and entrapment to study the humans they lure in, and the child acts as a catalyst to continue the cycle. The messaging is up to interpretation, but I think it’s pretty clear that the main overlying message is of the frivolity of life and the role humans play as a caregiving species. Our most basic purpose in life is to procreate to keep our species alive. The mother acts as the caregiver until they are no longer needed, and the cycle begins anew with the next generation. Yes, it’s a hopelessly dreary outlook on the purpose of human existence, bur it is an interesting commentary none-the-less. I felt that beyond the subliminal messaging and the minimal plot, that the true purpose was to make the viewer feel like they were experiencing this purgatory with the trapped couple. The value of the film is found within the experience of emotions, the hopelessness and dread, and the feeling of being trapped in an isolated and purposeless existence. In a way, the species orchestrating this “experiment” acts as a god figure who simply manipulates and observes, gaining knowledge on the frivolity of human existence and offering no help to their subjects beyond their basic need for food and shelter. It’s dark, it’s dreadful and it’s isolating and it leaves you feeling like nothing truly matters in the end.
