Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times 11/14/2013
Szumowska, who co-wrote the script with the film's first-rate cinematographer Michal Englert, effectively imbues this haunting, deeply reflective tale with equal parts tension, dread, desire and inevitability. Go to Full Review

The whole movie suffers from a lack of narrative momentum and a surfeit of wordless shots of men exchanging deep, meaningful glances. Go to Full Review
John Oursler Village Voice 10/29/2013
The exogenous factors contributing to his turmoil are the ones in which he's most indoctrinated, and by humanizing this broader struggle, Szumowska's institutional denouncements are even more heartbreaking and scathing. Go to Full Review

In the Name of is neither a pretentious succès de scandale nor an anti-clerical pamphlet. Nevertheless, Szumowska doesn’t shrink from touching on the code of silence often imposed by the higher echelons of the clergy Go to Full Review

Neal B 09/15/2024 Rare to get a movie with subtitles where you're more interested in the actors faces and actions than what they're saying. Fun to see a portrayal of a good priest utterly engaged in his existence as a creature on this earth. Lots of indulgent photography; I liked it. See more 10/30/2020 Another great movie where I agree with the critics and not the general public. If you don't let your prejudices get in the way, it's easy to really enjoy this movie. Very realistic movie with great actors and writing. If you want to watch a deep and meaningful movie, check it out. See more 11/18/2018 No se puede pelear contra nuestra propia naturaleza. Una imagen de una Polonia rural desconocida pero no diferente a las demás. El finalmente dejó en signo de interrogación. Me parece una señal para la iglesia católica See more 07/03/2016 Polish cinema decided to do something brave and show to the world this movie. The only thing is that this is not a movie about a forbidden love story. It is a movie about religious abstinence and human desire and how these both fight each other. It is a tale about human nature. Rural Poland is the setting where the movie takes place, with the narrow minded people and the church ruling over everyone. The movie barely touches those subjects while it is all about the priesthood and its difficulties, as well as it is about being true to one's self and desires. Chyra was quite possibly the greatest performance of the cast. See more 03/18/2016 A stupid little tale of a priest who falls for a guy who isn't quite there. Meant to be profound, this tale falls very flat. See more 03/01/2015 This is a Polish film set in rural Poland. A middle aged priest continues to struggle with his celibacy and loneliness. The film opens with the priest working in a small village and at the local home for delinquent boys. The story is engaging and well told. Among the older, teen aged boys (many looking somewhat older), everyone seems to have excellent gaydar. Everyone, that is, except for an attractive, unhappy, married young woman. And, for a small school/home, there seems to be an unusual number of gay boys. Several characters are partially fleshed out. The audience if left to draw their own conclusions about the motivations of various significant characters. The plight of the priest is sympathetically told. I saw this movie as part of the Film Movement series. It was an interesting trip to the flics. See more Read all reviews
