Audience Member Issam B. Makdissy's film seems both personal and powerful. Following Hamid a dutiful son who returns to Lebanon at the behest of his dying father, he finds himself reconnecting with his roots but also confronting the tragedy that caused him to flee the country many years ago. Issam writes and directs with total assurance evoking a fantastic understated performance from his lead Mazin Saba who anchors the film through his thoughtful and emotional journey. The film never seems over the top or maudlin in it's depiction of the Lebanese civil unrest and in doing so captures a powerful truth and leaves you stunned by the time the credits role. A fantastic film full of universal truths told within a very specific story and an interesting peak behind the curtain at another culture. Excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie, expertly told, manages to do a lot in under 90 minutes. It is a story about family and how to make amends with a tumultuous past. It is a travelogue about Lebanon, showcasing the culture and breathtaking beauty. It is a love story. And it is a cautionary tale about the horrors of land mines. There is much to go on here and a great cinematic journey. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member I found the story very moving and the acting and writing were really strong. It was very easy to connect with the emotional and physical journey that Hamid goes on. The on-location shooting looked amazing. The film is worth the watch for the visuals alone. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member "Yesterday went with Yesterday" is a very emotional story about forgotten landmines in Lebanon. It's wonderfully shot and heartfelt and should not be missed. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This was one of the deepest and most beautifully crafted indie films I've seen in a long, long time. Yesterday Went with Yesterday has a ton of emotional heft to it, so thoughtfully layered into a real gem of a story. Beautiful stuff! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is like a poem, it's moving, reflective and evocative, not heavy handed but makes a statement and is definitely worth your time. I loved the story, it's simple and understated, but what really spoke to me was the setting in a village in Lebanon. It was nice to see Lebanese culture through the eyes of the main character. Having spent time in the region it felt authentic and familiar, and most importantly not stereotypical, which can be hard to find unfortunately. The writing was wonderful, cinematography was beautiful and overall the performances felt very authentic. I can't recommend this film highly enough.
