In a small Polish village, impoverished musician Arye (Simche Fostel) and his young daughter, Itke (Molly Picon), decide to become traveling musicians, with Itke posing as a boy called Yiddle to remain safe. The pair joins with street musicians Isaac (Max Bozyk) and Froim (Leon Liebgold). Yiddle soon falls in love with Froim, but must maintain her masquerade. When the beautiful singer Tiebele (D. Fakiel) joins the group, Yiddle is consumed with jealousy as Tiebele becomes friendly with Froim.

Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Molly Picon is one of my favorite actresses. Filmed prior to WWII during a period when Yiddish theatre was at its height, this is an important film whose roots reach to later works such as "Yentl" and "Fiddler on the Roof."
