Noel Murray AV Club The emotional and narrative arc of "Shiny Happy People" was so perfect, starting out light and comical and then gradually becoming darker and scarier once Fred realized the truth about Jasmine. Sep 25, 2018 Full Review Julia Bianco Screen Rant Angel's fourth season was a mess. Sep 29, 2018 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters This is what Angel, perpetually struggling for its share of the Nielsen pie, so necessarily appreciates, cycles of vengeance and victory, compromise and consumption, as satire, strategy, and incipient calamity. Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Christine Klunk PopMatters While Angel retains its visual grandeur, by this season, it's slipping into simple shock as a source of excitement. Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette For at least the past two seasons, "Angel" has been the superior show [to Buffy]. Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Eric Goldman IGN Movies Season 4 of the show was one of the most intricate and heavily serialized storylines any series this decade has dared venture into, with nearly every episode leading directly into the next, and the stakes getting heavier and heavier. elijah K This season has some of the best content of the series as well as the absolute worst. Some wild and incredibly satisfying moments in the middle of the season. Conversely, it also has jarring tonal shifts, convoluted plots, character assassinations, and a very bizarre, disappointing final arc and villain. Fortunately the finale ends the season on a bit of a high note though. Not my least favorite season but definitely not the best. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review ahmed e it's a stupidity contest and Connor won it Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Incredibly dark and provocative, Season 4 of Angel is one of the most divisive seasons of the series. After being rescued from his watery prison Angel works with his team to find Cordelia, who returns from the ethereal plain with amnesia, and then partners up with Wesley when a demon called the Beast wipes out Wolfram & Hart and blocks out the sun. While the Beast makes for an interesting villain, the real life pregnancy of Charisma Carpenter ends up taking the season in a bizarre direction and undermines (if not ruins) the Cordelia character. However, Eliza Dushku returns to the series and has a very good arc with Angelus, and the final arc with Gina Torres is also pretty strong. Additionally, the writers do an impressive job at tying a lot of loose ends, as well as stories from the previous seasons, into this season's overall arc. But the Cordelia story is handled so poorly that it taints what is otherwise an incredible season. Yet despite some rather big, glaring problems, somehow Season 4 of Angel still manages to deliver an exciting and compelling (near epic) adventure.
