"Angel City" is a docuseries that goes behind the scenes and onto the pitch of the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women's soccer team, Angel City Football Club (ACFC). Founded in September 2020 by actor Natalie Portman, venture capitalist Kara Nortman and gaming entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, ACFC breaks the mold by being the largest majority female ownership group in professional sports and includes 14 former U.S. Women's National Team players as investors. The series pulls back the curtain on the origin story through the 2022 inaugural season and candidly reveals the passion and grit needed to build a franchise from scratch. While the athletes and coaching staff contend with training facility challenges and unexpected injuries, the club is tasked with filling the stadium and proving to the world that one can lead with passion and purpose and still turn a profit.

Robert Moran The Age (Australia) It’s a prescient reminder of what female footballers have already achieved without support and how much further the women’s game will go given the proper opportunity – and, I guess, a Natalie Portman. Ripper J I enjoy women's soccer (it has more finesse and team work and less flopping than the men's game) and Angel City is one of the teams I like to watch, so I expected to like this series. The first episode was interesting while episode two was mediocre. Episode three was mostly people yelling and random comments. Very little story; just noise. I turned it off. I think the story could have been completed in two episodes instead of trying to stretch it to three by editing in a bunch of noise. Or perhaps include a little more detail about the individual players journey. People screaming is not good story telling. Random comments edited together is not good story telling. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/29/23 Full Review Jess W Went to an ACFC match last year and was instantly captivated by the play, the players, that atmosphere, and the team's community spirit that I bought season seats for this year. I was looking forward to watching the documentary series to learn about the players and staff, but there is SO MUCH MORE to the story. From ownership's decisions to hire women in top jobs to their commitment to equity, safe working conditions, and fair employment practices for women athletes... completely inspiring. And the documentary shows the story beautifully; we would expect no less from Natalie Portman and HBO. Can't wait till the next episode... and the next match. I gotta buy a kit to show more support!
