The founding of Australia as a penal colony is fertile ground for drama but the series goes deeper than that. It delves into the mindsets of these various characters, their motivations and beliefs and why they behave the way they do. You feel you can understand everyone even when you completely disagree with their actions. The only downside is the series was left unfinished.
