World-famous neurologist Dr. Catherine Black works in a state-of-the-art center known as The Cube that draws patients with rare and often hallucinogenic conditions from all over the world. Despite her enormous success, Dr. Black carries secrets that she hides from both her colleagues and loved ones, principle among which is that she herself has bipolar disorder. The only person who knows everything is her psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Hartramph, who also acts as a mentor and mother figure to Catherine.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a strong cast that includes Kelly Reilly and Vanessa Redgrave, Black Box relies too heavily on unusual medical cases to offset a string of silly TV cliches about mental illness.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Should divert lovers of bodice-ripping medical procedurals. Rated: 3/5 Mar 10, 2021 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Will the writers keep Catherine cycling in and out of bipolar episodes and superficial cases weekly, as an easy way to stoke the drama? She doesn't deserve that, and neither do viewers. May 27, 2020 Full Review Esther Breger The New Republic Turning a diagnosis into a magic tool for crime-solving is simpler than writing a complicated, fully realized character. It's a sign of how reliant TV is on easy formula. Apr 25, 2014 Full Review Jessica Johnson Time Out Chicago This medical procedural gets hopelessly lost in the details and struggles to maintain a balance between its lead character's personal problems and the standard case-of-the-week plot lines. Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Jessica Rawden CinemaBlend It sounds intriguing, but what makes Black Box such a unique endeavor also makes it a chaotic, hellish program. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 29, 2014 Full Review Matt Fowler IGN Movies Black Box is awful. It aims for high art, but it's pure juvenilia. Rated: 2/10 Apr 24, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews

Shannon L This was so good!! I was shocked when it was canceled Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent show. One of the best I've seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member One thing I like about the series is the crossover of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry. Too bad it's now cancelled. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Honestly, this show was absolutely outstanding. I feel that it was truly ahead of its time. The only thing that brought it down was how cerebral it was. There was always a lot to think about after every episode, so much so that it could overwhelm its audience. But the casting and writing was so smart and well executed, no one was to blame for the demise of the show other than the audience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member absolutely amazing!! must have a season 2!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Love love love this show. Excellent storyline, great acting and a drama that grabs you and doesn't let go. Excellent fresh spin on a medical drama. Hope there is a season 2 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
