When the corpse of an 11-year-old British boy, Danny Latimer, is found bloodied and dirty on an idyllic beach, a small Dorset community becomes the focus of a police investigation and media madness. Out-of-town Detective Inspector Alec Hardy gets the point position over Detective Sgt. Ellie Miller -- who feels the job should have been hers. Now she must engage in an efficient working relationship with taciturn Hardy. Slowly, more members of the community of Broadchurch are drawn into the investigation, with a telephone engineer drawing great attention when he admits to a special connection to the case. While dealing with so much unwelcome attention, Danny's family tries to cope with its grief. When a suspect is named and charged, the ensuing trial sees the defendant promising to expose more of the townspeople's secrets.

Allison Keene Collider Full of hope and love even in the wake of tragedy. It's not just a good place to end, but an excellent place to start. Sep 9, 2020 Full Review Melinda Houston Sydney Morning Herald We get not just seamless exposition, we get a tremendous feel for character that has us instantly caring about who these people are and how this event affects them. A fabulous cast helps, too. Rated: 4/5 Jun 14, 2017 Full Review Caryn James James on screenS Broadchurch is based on a generic premise, but nothing feels stale. With depth and passion, Colman brings her character's profound questioning to vibrant life. Sep 24, 2013 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk It looks as if Broadchurch will reveal itself as a "town-with-murky-secrets" story, but on the evidence of this first episode we can expect it to be done with a skilful touch and a fine eye for detail. Jul 23, 2018 Full Review Megan Basham WORLD I recommend the original as a rare, only somewhat tarnished gem in a garbage-littered landscape. Apr 17, 2018 Full Review Ankita Chawla Scroll.in Tennant and Colman are joined by an incredible cast... It's a murder mystery with a lot of heart. May 25, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Marco B It's hard for me to give a review to this first season having seen it 14 years after its release. It's clear that it doesn't stand the test of time and that the script is far from good writing but it's still a linear product that somehow manages to entertain with some decent twists. It's a shame about the completely ridiculous subplots and the total lack of action. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Ted B 5 stars; ...and I don't say that lightly. I have probably rated between 100 and 200 films/series on Rotten Tomatoes, and I bet I haven't given more than three or four five-star ratings. After watching a production, I try to pick it apart afterward. The first time I watched "Broadchurch—Season 1" was back when Netflix was renting DVDs. I gave it top billing then. I ran across it a few weeks ago on Prime and thought I'd watch it again and give it a Rotten Tomatoes rating. Since I remembered the "whodunnit" aspect, I figured I would be less moved by it this time. OMG! To my surprise, I was even more moved. I can't find anything disappointing about this series—excellent acting, directing, screenplay, musical score, location, and overall production. How often do you see all of these elements put together in such an outstanding fashion? I loved it just as much, if not more, than the first time. And...I don't say that lightly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Chris W Absolutely amazing. The story was absolutely thrilling and had me completely hooked the whole way through. All the actors were absolutely class, especially David Tennant and Olivia Coleman. This is a must watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Chet T Extremely well written! For a "who done it" crime show, this has great characters and lots of misdirection. It is very tastefully done, not too much empty action or drama. Performance by Cole is excellent! Season 1 is one of the best crime dramas I've seen. It's up there with Line of Duty, Happy Valley or Mare of Eastown. Season two (although it added some good new performances) just couldn't keep up with season 1. If season 1 was 4.5/5, season two is still worth watching at 3.5/5. Looking forward to the finale. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Jonathan A Unsatisfying!!! Beautifully acted, nicely written, well produced British small-town drama. Unfortunately there was one thing missing - a decent PLOT. The story catches our interest really enough with a crime revealed in the first episode. But between episodes 2 and 6 we learn virtually nothing further about the crime - only a few vague and potentially incriminating diversionary tidbits about some of the town's inhabitants. The investigation gets slightly interesting in episode 7, and then in episode 8, Hey Presto!! The murderer comes out of the woodwork - not because the police investigation was closing in on them, but because, well, they got sick of hiding. I can't blame them!! I was also wondering when the coppers were going to figure it out. Save yourself some time - watch episodes 1 and 2, then skip straight to episodes 7 and 8. You won't miss anything, and you'll have had 4 hours in your life to spend doing something useful or enjoyable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Michael G You can't beat the acting in this show, and the writing is top notch (apart from the obvious choices of the murderers in seasons 1 and 2.) This is everything a TV series should be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
