      2019 Holiday Drama List
83% 6 Reviews Tomatometer 90% Fewer than 50 Ratings Audience Score Adapted by Heidi Thomas from the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, this drama series is a moving, funny, colorful look at midwifery and family in 1950s East End London. It follows newly qualified midwife Jenny, who joins an eccentric, lovable community of nuns who are nurses at Nonnatus House. Jenny is surprised to find herself at a convent -- she thought she was being sent to a small private hospital -- and is initially daunted by her surroundings, most notably the formidable Sister Evangelina and the unconventional Sister Monica Joan. But Jenny gradually begins to find her way and develops incredible friendships among the nurses, as they are drawn into the lives and homes of the women and families they treat. Bla M What a lovely season! Trixie being back feels so good! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/16/22 Full Review simonomis Another amazing season! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/30/22 Full Review Audience Member I've been watching this show for months now. I like it , but , I wish there a little more focus on the babies , and less on the midwives . Having said that I can't wait to see what happens next to the little Chinese girl. This series reminds me a lot of those Christian shows from the seventies I watched when I was a kid . Shows like " Little House on Prairie " and " The Waltons." I didn't know they made these kinds of shows with a life lesson at every episode. I think I like it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Season 8 was horrific. I used to love the show when it was based upon Jenny Lee's true memoirs, but season 8 descended into pure social justice swill. It showed midwives forcibly removed elderly patients from their homes in the name of the law and helping young girls to leave their families by offering them government welfare. To make it worse, the season focused heavily on the horrors of abortion, only to come to the conclusion, in the last 5 minutes of the final episode, that the act of murdering babies and destroying lives would somehow be made better if it were legalized by the government. And it even showed the abortionist/murderess in a forgiving light. I'm disgusted. Never watching the show again. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alexandra Pollard Independent (UK) The period drama has become such a festive TV tradition that reviewing it feels almost churlish - like reviewing my grandma's Christmas card. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2019 Full Review Michael Hogan Daily Telegraph (UK) This was a return to form: an absorbingly paced, perfectly judged slice of Sunday-night pleasure. Rated: 4/5 Jan 18, 2019 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) Although you know full well it deals in schmaltz and shameless heartstring-pulling, Call the Midwife exerts a strange power. Rated: 4/5 Jan 15, 2019 Full Review Malcolm Hopwood Stuff.co.nz Now in its latest season, Call The Midwife is a well-oiled machine. It's part Pollyanna, part Shortland Street and part Dr Phil. Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) The toasty, Victoria Wood-style humour of Call the Midwife was as ever balanced by a clear-eyed look at the tougher side of life for women of the time.
