      Season 1 – Cheers

      1982 Comedy List
98% 41 Reviews Tomatometer 90% 50+ Ratings Audience Score Laid-back Sam Malone, a former relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, owns and runs Cheers, a cozy bar in Boston. He hires smart, uptight -- and jilted -- Diane Chambers as a server, out of sympathy, but their attraction causes constant bickering. Wacky characters fill the bar: sarcastic waitress Carla, beer-loving accountant Norm, know-it-all postman Cliff. When Diane leaves Boston much later, Sam sells the bar, buys a boat and sails the world, but his boat sinks, so he returns. New, ambitious manager Rebecca Howe hires him back, but they love to hate each other too. Read More Read Less Watch on Fandango at Home Premiered Sep 26 Buy Now

Mike P This is one of the all time greats! It's a Tracy/Hepburn reboot essentially; a hilarious odd coupling of motormouths which anchor the show; she, a pretentious and wildly eccentric academian; and he, a crude, stupid womanizing jock. Let the games begin! Long and Danson have terrific chemistry and the show sizzles when the two of them are at battle. And the supporting cast/ Greek chorus of bar patrons who hilariously rift off the Sam and Diane pyrotechnics are superb. Those first five years are truly classic; it's hard to find another show that was so finely crafted; and worked so perfectly; it hummed like a Swiss watch. After Shelley left the show lost something. Kirstie wasn't bad but since the show was really crafted to feature the Sam/Diane relationship in a Tracy/Hepburn face off week after week; once Shelley left there was something essential missing. Some fun facts about the show: Shelley Long was a pitchwoman for famous furniture outlet John M Smyth Homemakers for several years in Chicago, where she starred in a series of television commercials for them. (And she sported both blonde and black hair for these commercials, which can be seen on YouTube!) This was all before she starred in Cheers! Her cache phrase? "Remember, it's not low price furniture. It's good furniture, at lower prices!" Shelley and George Wendt were also Second City Allums during this period, in the late 70s early 80s; both at the same time before they came to Cheers. Shelley and George were also on Mash together during this period. And Rhea Pearlman, Ted Danson, George Wendt, Carol Kane and Christopher Lloyd were all on Taxi and Cheers during this whole period as well. Another fun tidbit, although the show would have you believe Woody was from Hanover Indiana, he was actually from Texas, and Shelley was the one that was actually from Indiana! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I've thoroughly enjoyed two sitcoms in my entire life, both before my "time" and this is one of them. Hilarious and fun. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Another very good, funny show to revisit on Hulu during the Covid slow down Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Best tv series ever. Template for modern ensemble comedies. The writing is the most intelligent so far. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member While establishing quite an enjoyable atmosphere inside a small Boston bar with lovable regular customers and sharp humor, the most entertaining moments come from the cat and mouse games played by the standout performances of Ted Danson and Shelley Long. Brian Courtis The Age (Australia) An excellent show, then, well worth raising our glasses to. Cheers! Jun 15, 2021 Full Review Marie McNamara The Age (Australia) The original and appealing setting for Cheers, its quick and clever script and refreshing acting, all lead one to wonder why the U.S. can't produce more of this and less of Diff'rent Strokes. Jun 15, 2021 Full Review Jacqueline Lee Lewes Sydney Morning Herald The humor in Cheers is what I call "lateral humor." Most of the laughs come not so much from the main theme of the series, but rather from the dialogue on the side. Jun 15, 2021 Full Review Win Fanning Pittsburgh Post-Gazette A splendid cast, headed by Shelley Long, a college-educated cocktail waitress, and bar owner Ted Danson, make Cheers something to cheer about. Aug 12, 2021 Full Review Mike Boone Montreal Gazette These cracks may not read like knee-slappers, but [George] Wendt's delivery and the sheer enthusiasm he brings to the role of a bar hound make Norm one of the classic characters in the best new comedy of the season. Jan 14, 2021 Full Review Michael Dougan San Francisco Examiner If Newhart isn't the best new show of the season, it must be Cheers, a crisply written and nicely performed sitcom about life in a Boston bar.
