"Dare Me" is an unflinching exploration of volatile female friendships, jealousy, loyalty and the dynamics of power in a small Midwestern town. Peering behind the all-American facade, the series dives into the cutthroat world of competitive high school cheerleading, following the fraught relationship between two best friends after a new coach arrives to bring their team to prominence. Part coming-of-age story, part small-town drama, part murder mystery, "Dare Me" exposes the physical and psychological extremes that some young women are willing to endure to get ahead.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Visceral, if at times vapid, Dare Me's slow-burning thriller pairs nicely with its moody atmospherics to create a deft exploration of the interiority of teen life.

Amy Jones Daily Telegraph (UK) It's brilliantly acted and a fascinating, incredibly fraught thing to watch. Rated: 3/5 Jun 15, 2020 Full Review Shirley Li The Atlantic Such plotting -- of teenage girls being pitted against each other and drifting apart -- could come off cliche, but Dare Me does more than incorporate the trope. It examines the way conflict warps the girls' perception of each other, giving it more nuance. Jan 14, 2020 Full Review Carla Meyer San Francisco Chronicle The show's first two episodes try to stoke a small-town Friday Night Lights feel... that never quite takes. Jan 13, 2020 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast An overly long and complicated adaptation of Megan Abbott's book, Dare Me suffers from too much slow motion, montage and ponderous voice over. Willa Fitzgerald and Marlo Kelly excel as messy, complicated women, but Herizen Guardiola pales in comparison. Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Victoria Brownworth Curve It’s a masterful series with superb acting and writing, amazing cinematography, a Spotify playlist to die for and characters who are unforgettable. May 19, 2022 Full Review Abby Robinson Digital Spy It's a seamless blend of tangible, real-world relatability and high-stakes drama, both trashy and perceptive, serving up some much-needed escapism in these trying and troublesome times. James B Decently watchable considering it’s about a team of cheerleaders, not my usual favourite subject matter for a TV show. The ad for the show got my attention when they were comparing it to Euphoria. Not quite the wild ride that was Euphoria (bring on season 3!) and when they say ‘slow burn’ they were right it’s very slow burn indeed. Good writing and well acted but be warned there is no season 2 and this one ends on a cliffhanger leaving you wondering where it goes from here. Shame they didn’t keep it to 1 season. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Anastasia G This show is an absolute gem! The cinematography and the acting are top-notch! The writing kept me hooked from the beginning! Totally a must-watch. I wish it continued... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Marianna K Really wanted to like this but the characters were too unlikeable and plot too slow and tedious... couldn't get past episode 2. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I can't find one redeeming quality about this show, other than the acting. The show, which is based on a book apparently, is about toxic friendships, young women struggling with mental health and trauma (which goes completely unaddressed), bullying, manipulation, eating disorders, you name all of the messed up things that young women can experience and this author just decided to put them into a series sandwich. What is the point of it? I'm all for a gritty story about real human experience, but this was just over the top. I was shocked to see it has 85% on this site. No entertainment value, I could barely make it through the series. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Some of the absolute most horrendously terrible writing I've ever experienced in a tv show. Irredeemably bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved this show, was devastated to learn it won't be getting renewed. It had real potential Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
