Detective Brett Hopper is having a particularly bad day, one where absolutely nothing will go his way. If that wasn't bad enough, it looks like Hopper is repeating the same day over and over again. On this day, he's been accused of murdering Assistant D.A. Alberto Garza -- and no one believes his rock-solid alibi. He winds up on the run, where he finds out that his loved ones are in danger, too. The next morning, the trauma starts all over again. In order to break the cycle, Hopper needs to find out who framed him and why -- effectively solving the mystery surrounding Garza's death.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A truly gripping performance from Taye Diggs can't alleviate Day Break's exhaustive pacing and gimmicky nature.

Alessandra Stanley New York Times ABC's latest effort has a strong cast and a clever premise. Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Nancy DeWolf Smith Wall Street Journal Following the show will require some effort for viewers accustomed to less demanding fare. It's not as soapy as "Lost," which it will replace at least until next year. On the other hand, it has Taye Diggs. Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Robert Bianco USA Today The story driving Day Break is neither original nor sensible, but it is, at least, potentially diverting. Rated: 2/4 Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Sierra Filucci Common Sense Media The show's complexity, along with the tense momentum, makes it hard to resist, despite its somewhat gimmicky nature. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Travis Fickett IGN Movies ABC has created a streamlined puzzle box of a thriller that fully exploits its central premise. Rated: 9/10 Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Mike Kelly Toledo Blade Day Break... is an acting challenge for [Taye] Diggs, who must play nearly every scene in frazzled, full-throttle mode. I wonder who will tire of the pace sooner - him or the viewers. Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This is one of the most under rated shows of all time. Unfortunately like most, I did not find the series until after it was cancelled. However, the writing is great and the plot construction keeps you invested. I'm not sure why this show failed while others keep getting renewed. Possibly there was not enough marketing muscle behind it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I actually really liked it. Near the end there's some editing mishaps and you can tell when the show was struggling due to network issues, but it was overall a very enjoyable ride. Sad that there wasn't a second season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This show is a fantastic cop drama with a backdrop of a time loop, it is absolutely fun and interesting every episode. The only problem I had was with the ending since they set up a second season and they never got one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Put aside the question of how Hopper's repeating the day, and this show is pretty good! This is a very unique show, and not just in the plot. There are some bad episodes, but we pretty much always learn at least one thing in every episode, so that makes them not as bad. The show is also really great because we're learning with Hopper, we're almost like a sidekick or partner. Taye Diggs is perfect, and every other actor is perfect. This show is like 24 in the casting! The entire series is well acted and well made, with great characters. The cinematography is excellent, and there are some shots that are so great! The score is excellent, like something from 24! There isn't much action, and it's not very tense or thrilling. This is first and foremost a mystery drama. After episode 6, it starts to get a little less good, slow, and boring, with the exception of the end/cliffhanger of episodes 8 and 12 (maybe because episode 6 was the last episode to air on TV? maybe they didn't have the back half finished, so after they got cancelled, they did something different and messed it all up?) But, the show still has Taye Diggs, and the uniqueness of the show, so it's not awful. Once I buy the DVD set, I may do video episode reviews. If I do, I'll link to it here! I'll discuss the finale here: http://spoileralertblog.weebly.com/blog/day-break-finale but, SPOILER ALERT: We find out the supposed guy pulling the strings at the end of episode 8, but then they start to finish solving the rest of the clues because they need a solid line and enough evidence, and that get's a little tiring when you think you already know who's at the top. They should have first done all the solving they did after the reveal, and then do the episode 8 reveal. Shout out to Rotten Tomatoes for making a TV series page for the show! The movie page is still up, but at least I can review it and have it show up under TV shows now! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
