Lucy Mangan Guardian It’s clearly not intended to be anything like The Good Wife or The Good Fight. But it’s not charming enough to be the playful homage to the unsophisticated detective shows of yesteryear that it wants to be either. Rated: 2/5 Jul 24, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The weekly murder mystery gets a welcome fillip with this offshoot from The Good Wife... The show makes the most of the ‘howcatchem’ genre. May 9, 2024 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe As far as simple pleasures go, “Elsbeth” is just fine. There are no big surprises or twists coming at us; just some lighthearted perp-finding amid plenty of fish-out-of-watering, as our sunny heroine deals with New York City toughness. Apr 30, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz While I would have loved to have seen a spin-off featuring the political misadventures of Alan Cumming's Eli Gold and his charismatic daughter Marissa (Sarah Steele), Elsbeth is exactly the delight-filled hoot you’d truly hoped it would be. Jun 29, 2024 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said Clever, and unusual, hits timely cultural moments, and showcases Carrie Preston’s terrific comedic skills and New York, New York. Rated: 4/4 May 17, 2024 Full Review Joshua Pleming TV Fanatic The most bittersweet aspect of "An Ear for an Ear" is that Officer Kaya was fully present from beginning to end, showcasing her grounded but soft approach to handling Elsbeth and yet another murder case. Pat R If you combined Murder She Wrote, Monk and Columbo you'd get Elsbeth. Not very original ! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Ton S If we observe anything from this show it's how the police are quick to wrongfully convict people and if there is not a abnormally observant side kick well - you to can be in the wrong place at the wrong time and get locked up. Have you noticed how show with police are either woefully incompetent or straight up corrupt. How many shows do we watch that the police justify using brutal force and it's acceptable because...they are showing us he the, "bad guy". Take Psych for instance. Lassitere was a boob that everyone placated because...he was a cop. I like the actors and I have enjoyed the show Elsbeth was spunoff from - but the writing is more of the same goose stepping BS preparing out nation for a fascist society. How? Keep watching shows that overly praise the military folks and police as untouchable. The show had great potential but if every show starts out with Elsberh schtick of a bumbling idiot that trips into to genius well... Snore Thanks for demonstrating police incompetence again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/30/24 Full Review Charlie G This is Columbo with a female lead. We get to see the murder committed then watch as Elsbeth proves they did it. Almost exactly like Columbo without the raincoat and dog. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review Hamlet 1 I actually really like the shows characters and the acting is very good. My issue comes down to the writing. I am not really sure what I am watching. I would lean toward murder/mystery but it isn't really. There is a murder, but there is no mystery. The audience knows who killed the victim and then waits around to see how Elsbeth figures it out. I'm sure the writers think this is clever, but is it really? It seems like a waste of a lot of talented people on writing that is, at best, mediocre. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review April G I absolutely love this show. It's a quirky comedy crime series...reminds me of Monk. I miss those types of shows. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review JES L I’m disappointed. I loved the character on Good Wife, and was looking fwd to the shows…but now realize it doesn’t work for me as a whole show. For me, I like to watch a cop show not knowing the who’s guilty. That’ ruined bec Elsbeth knows the guilty party by looking at them and does her quirky bit to annoy them into being caught. I say annoying because that’s how I feel when watching and why I turned off the episode abt the plastic surgeon. She wasn’t upset so it equaled quilty. ANNOYING.
