Critics Consensus

Dark and brooding, but also confusing and contrived, Emerald City is the Game of Thrones/Wizard of Oz mashup nobody asked for.

Vinnie Mancuso Observer I DO know that Emerald City is the direct result of some evil thing hooking the cheerful, technicolor classic The Wizard of Oz up to the death machine from The Princess Bride and sucking every ounce of life out of it. Jan 11, 2017 Full Review Gail Pennington St. Louis Post-Dispatch The plotting is goofy, the tone is relentlessly dark and the pacing is excruciatingly slow. Worst, the characters are hard to care about. Rated: 1/4 Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Tim Goodman The Hollywood Reporter If marching down the yellow poppy-pollen road of opium, through the Westeros hills and toward a 10-hour story that might pay off with some visual treats is the kind of TV journey you're up for, by all means head to Emerald City. Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Akhil Arora Gadgets360 NBC clearly saw some potential in this new modern take on an old tale, but its opening two hours are proof that it could have done with more heart à la Dorothy, and less of the grittiness that's taken over prestige television. Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Melody McCune Geek Girl Authority I'm stoked for more, and I hope you are too! Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Katharine Trendacosta io9.com There's so much going on that it's easy to assume there's something more going on underneath the surface. But there isn't. It's all hollow. Lis R The locations used for filming and the costume department did a masterful job at creating the fantastical feel of Oz. There have been many adaptations of the story, but Emerald city managed to feel different and unique, without losing the wonder of the original tale. I especially enjoyed how it humanized and gave the Scarecrow, the tin man and the lion backstories. The hierarchy between the witches and the wizard was interesting and I love how the series brought a more political intrigue to the original tale. It’s a shame it was canceled after one season. The show truly had the potential to grow into a classic over time. ^^ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Carlee G Emerald City starts slow but evolves into a gripping and unique storyline. As a child, I was obsessed with The Wizard of Oz, and I loved the reimagining for an adult audience. It’s a dark and mature take that offers in-depth and evolving characters. My only complaint is that there is only one season. On the right platform, this series could have been a hit for many years. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/25 Full Review Andy H Why so serious? That's what said to me after watching The Dark Night. Isn't Batman a super hero. Well, thats what made "The Dark Night" the "The Dark Night", and not just another super hero movie (although that was before the SH churn). But I am just borrowing that quote here, "Why so serious?". There is no point really. But ok, its pretty good, and I got hooked, on that west-coast to east-coast flight anyway. I do like darkness, it seems. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Mike C This was so bad, and Im an enormous fan of all fantasy movies like this. I really wanted it to be great. The acting was horrible across the board and the main actors were definitely miscast. Nothing exciting or intriguing ever happened, horrible plot of there even was a plot. I knew by episode 3 that this would be cancelled by the bad acting alone. I can’t believe they even aired this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Jon L Phenomenal visuals and intriguing characters and story. It was an absolute tragedy that only one season was produced. I only just found out about Emerald City last month but I loved every minute of it.
