A sign of the apocalypse has begun. Reports of a rapidly changing world for unknown reasons underscore this gritty drama, a prequel to AMC's uber-popular "Walking Dead." The story is told through the lens of high school guidance counselor Madison Clark. The widowed mother is raising two children single-handedly and maintains a relationship with English teacher Travis Manawa, her apocalyptic partner. The challenge of blending their families is exacerbated by unforeseen chaos, and a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite delivering some memorable and splatter-filled zombie set-pieces that fans crave, Fear the Walking Dead feels stiff with early-onset rigor mortis in a fifth season that emphasizes altruism over coherent characterization.

Christopher Groux Newsweek There are major plot developments worth looking forward to. Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Brandon Davis ComicBook.com Treating the audience like it isn't smart enough to apply logic is not a good move. Fear the Walking Dead threw a lot of logic and rules out the window this season, right down to having a couple of people soaring in a hot air balloon. Rated: 2/5 Sep 30, 2019 Full Review Jess Lee Digital Spy Fear the Walking Dead returned for its fifth season with a bang, but there was also an intriguing Rick Grimes Easter egg that may have teased a connection to the wider universe. Sep 30, 2019 Full Review Kirsten Acuna Business Insider If we're going to watch a spin-off that's becoming centered around expanding the mysteries of "TWD," I'd love to see a bold "Fear" which cleaves away at some of the fat while doing so. Rated: C Jun 18, 2019 Full Review Laura Bradley Vanity Fair Perhaps this new connection to a bigger overarching story will make a once ancillary show more necessary viewing for hardcore fans. Let's just hope this season's new villains turn out to be more interesting than last season's murderous, rambling Martha. Audience Member Ugh! Season 5 is barely watchable. Boy did this show take a nose dive, it's like it's not even the same show. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Jeremy S They obviously fired previous writers and decided to go in a different direction, and failed. Pathetic story line and flat acting throughout. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Brett L Seriously the worst season of any Walking Dead show. EVERTHING, and i mean EVERYTHING about season 5 was bad. The characters and their decisions they made. The unnatural dialogue and constant talk about "Helping People NO MATTER WHAT" and feelings was so stupid. The "Villains of this season sucked and where forced and contrived. Much like everything else this season, things were so forced, contrived, and so easy to come by. I mean honestly, here they were in the state of Texas and everyone was just able to find everyone when they wanted. The constant use of walkie-talkies was ridiculous and so fake it was laughable. And lets us not forget those awful POV episodes and the introduction/death of the most stupid character to ever be on any Walking Dead show...Tom. And then finally, things this season were boring...Like REALLY boring. Anyways, this was just awful TV folks. Such a bad season with bad everything. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Nick S The show fell off a cliff. It's boring, uninspired... I couldn't make myself to care at all. Thankfully it was watched as a "background" while I work, but still. Not sure what they were thinking but it's basically a parody of it former self now and not taking itself seriously at all. What a waste of the world, IP, and characters/actors. The only redeeming quality is a bit more "word building" insight into the TWD world in general. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Gorptholemew T 🍀 1.9/10 So I just gotta complain hard 😫. I hate this pls god there’s 3 more seasons left way. I loved the mall but only for one FUCKING EPISODE! Can they just stop please I know they did but it should’ve been much earlier. Also I hate the found footage segments there so cheesy and this show’s atmosphere is so dry by this point. D- Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review D L I like that they have started to try and help people. So much of TWD series is about fighting one another, it gets old and very depressing/demoralizing. They are still doing the thing where the really loud walkers somehow can sneak up on people and cause a scene. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
