Davia D A fantastically fun show; Genlock has a grade A+ voice cast, banging music, creative setting- it does follow a number of standard mecha tropes but that's fine in my book since it pulls them off well. It's not a long watch and I deeply enjoyed every episode. It also ends in a reasonably satisfying place, which is good because s2 changes a lot for the worse (entirely different writing team) and I can't recommend. Though if you want more, there is both a comic and a book. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review christopher c. m The animation style is okay, standard. But the actual animation is stiff, like old PC game. We follow Julian Chase who was critically injured when he activates an EMP, winning the day but causing his jet to crash. Either by 2068 they suddenly removed ejector seats or the makers forget that ejector seats are analog and not affected by EMP and a world that knows EMO should have kept it analog. Plus, who are the Union? Are they aliens? Is it another country? There is a lack of world building in the world of the FUTURE! All we know of the politics is that the Union is bad, that's it. For a show that is TV-14 it seems pretty much one dimensional. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Pesimo dibujo, mala animacion y mal guion Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The pacing is odd at times and I'd be lying if I said there weren't a handful of times I was very worried the show was about to lose me. That being said, it does so much right and ultimately laid down a better than expected base for what has thus far been a second season that has started hitting on all cylinders and doing everything I had hoped to see in the first season! As the story fleshes out and gaps are filled in I begin to appreciate the first season and it's "safe" approach for providing such a stout base for season two. The art and direction is nothing short of gorgeous. The sound is, in my subjective opinion, fantastic. I've caught myself thinking about how much the score during action sequences coupled with the SFX is really captivating and engaging. I mean, I thoroughly appreciate and enjoy it. I don't think they do anything that makes you think or evaluate much beyond and surface level until season two. I do appreciate that the "woke" topics weren't forced feeling and again, I was so very appreciative of this. I'm a very liberal person, and I feel making some of this stuff main stream is important to effect social change away from harmful stereotypes and what not. This is one of the few shows I feel tackles them in a subtle, organic enough nature that it's not off putting. Overall, I feel like this serious has an unbelievable amount of potential that is being realized with breakneck speed in season two. Look at this season as a primer that in and of itself is a little above average. However, as long as season two continues how it has thus far, season one's approach makes so much more sense and personally I feel like I can easily rate it closer to exceptional when viewed as part of the bigger body of work. Watch it, if not for the simplistic beauty of the art, the truly great voice acting and bonkers talent pool it draws from, or simply because it's been a minute since there has been a mech focused ANYTHING that was good. Or, and if you haven't caught this yet, watch it for my favorite aspect of the show -- being so pleasantly surprised that for the first time I can remember, a show that had so much potential, such a special amount of talent but seemed unsure of where it wanted to go or what it wanted to be was straight up slow playing me and is using what it laid out to full effect and taking chances and pushing the envelope in it's sophomore season in a way that is so effective entirely because of how the first season was crafted. Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding season two easily exceeding my expectations and can't wait to see where it goes from here. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A shocking look at a fantastical scifi global war. Full of speculative tech and amazing voice acting, I would give it a look. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member GEN: LOCK season 1. When making a sci-fi, political war epic, it is important that the audience feels that they understand the different sides of the conflict, at least in a minute way. The show doesn't explain that to me and no matter of Giant robot battles or Aerial dog fights will change that. I felt like I was missing an entire season of setup. There are moments that the characters talk about; that happen off-screen that I wish I saw. There are even character deaths and betrayals that are lackluster because there was zero effort setting those up. Or making the viewer connect with these characters. Despite that, it's okay if you shut your brain off. The animation is good, and the Voice acting is really amazing in some spots. The pay off is also not bad.
