An aspiring writer and her three friends in New York try to make sense of what life has in store for them after college. They're not sure what they want or whom they want it from, and the picture isn't getting any clearer. Hannah thinks she has what it takes to be a successful writer, if only she would write something. She wants a boyfriend without dealing with an actual relationship, and she wants a job without having to work. Marnie is Hannah's best friend, a Type A personality who has a serious boyfriend and an actual job. Jessa is a devil-may-care bohemian whose apparent lack of fear hides her own kind of insecurity. Her cousin, Shoshanna, is an NYU student who would love nothing more than to experience a "Sex and the City" lifestyle. The others tend to underestimate Shoshanna, but she proves to be a sharp source of wisdom.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though some characters have devolved into caricatures, watching them struggle in Girls is more fun in season five, with sharper humor and narrative consistency than prior seasons.

Spencer Kornhaber The Atlantic There is love and gentleness to the show that is more pervasive than ever before in the fifth season. Mar 20, 2017 Full Review Pilot Viruet New York Magazine/Vulture "Wedding Day" certainly got my attention - I thought Marnie and Desi were done! I thought Marnie would end up with her one true love Ray! - and was, in a general sense, one of the better episodes of the series. Rated: 4/5 Jun 7, 2016 Full Review Sally Newall Independent (UK) Because we've come to know these characters and invested in them, we want to keep watching to see how their stories end. Feb 26, 2016 Full Review Britt Hayes ScreenCrush Each episode feels like we're dropping in on a specific moment, as if we're watching a visual essay plucked from a weekly journal entry. Jun 18, 2018 Full Review Daniel Krauze El Financiero Brave and perceptive, Girls is a wonder. Audience Member This is one of the best shows I have ever watched, and I binged all of the seasons while pondering if it could ever be possible to love a group of characters any more than this! I fully concur with the critics - "Insightful and well-cast, Girls captures the experience of contemporary twentysomething womanhood with a bristling wit that's alternately hilarious and effectively squirm-inducing." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member What a depressing final season. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The first four seasons were going on a very fast downhill slope but this season was a big change. The characters really annoy me but in a very familiar way which i am used to now and actually enjoy. Hannah always really confuses me as a character because she is just so clueless and selfish but I can kind of empathize with her. The episodes that focused solely on Marnie and Shoshanna were really good and I also loved Elijah's arc so much in the story. Adam I have never really liked and continue to dislike just because of how crazy he is and I can't understand why so many of the characters gravitate towards him though I feel like Jessa is his perfect match because she is insane. It has been a bumpy ride for girls but we are getting back on track for what I hope to be an incredible final season. 3.5/5 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Girls' penultimate year is its best season yet, as it's funnier, smarter, and even a bit more somber. Dunham has brought her characters to new highs in their lives, but also new lows, and there are plenty of shocking reveals this year (both sexual and otherwise). The writers seem to have acknowledged certain criticisms that the show's characters have received, and have deconstructed them in some really unexpected ways. The Marnie-centric episode Panic in Central Park may even rank as the season's best, as it reaches a new psychological plateau for the series, and is a calling card for Allison Williams' future as an actress. Despite the added drama, the show is as colorful as ever, complete with a fun sub-plot about Shoshana working in Japan, and the humor feels natural and hilarious without relying on zingers. If you dropped this show a few seasons back feeling that you couldn't stand the over-priveleged characters, then now might be the time to catch up. This is HBO's best show by a mile! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Están como las películas sobre el racismo. ¿No creen que existen otros temas más interesante y no tan USADOS? Pero bueno, esta de moda el feminismo. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I've watched all the seasons of "Girls" and I'm led to understand that this will be the last. Will I miss it? Probably not, as these characters have become more and more self-entitled as the show has progressed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
