Adam Sandler Variety David Simon and David Mills weave themes of police insensitivity, victims rights and dysfunctional families into the whole cloth of the gritty realities of law enforcement, keeping the emotional rollercoaster they've created moving swiftly on track. Aug 15, 2018 Full Review William Thomas Empire Magazine The performances remain strong, especially from the awesome Yaphet Kotto, who delivers nearly every line with the gravitas of a Shakespearean pro. Rated: 4/5 Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Phil Dyess-Nugent AV Club This is a cracking hour of television that could easily have turned into a preachy bag of gas. Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... a different kind of show in every way. Barry Levinson, who produced the series with writer/producer Tom Fontana, was determined to make a cop drama without car chases or shoot-outs. Apr 30, 2025 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters Justly famous, not only for [Robin] Williams' extraordinary performance, but also for the complexities of the case and characterizations. Aug 15, 2018 Full Review David Zurawik Baltimore Sun If you haven't seen Homicide, let me tell you: Outside of Hill Street Blues, it's the best cop drama ever done for TV. emm c So unique and gripping Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Only 4 episodes, so amazed it's called a "season", Nevertheless the old mantra that less is better certainly applies here. Of course the standout episode is "Bop Gun" starring Robin Williams as the distraught husband to a wife who was shot and killed during a robbery. Plenty of heartfelt pathos from Williams as the victim trying to come to terms with his loss, while the detectives just see him as another statistic on their crime board! Season 2 still follows the same gritty feel as its predecessor - all rather negative and pessimistic compared to your usual formulaic cop show. Which may explain why NBC bosses were worried about the show's appeal to a seemingly disinterested national viewing public. Which resulted in some significant changes for season 3 - and not all for the best either! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Michael M Homicide: Life on the Street's second fells very similar to the first – same structure, same cast, same use of jump cuts. This is not a knock against the show, since the first season was very solid television. The season is, however, even shorter at only four episodes in length. I suspect the producers were still trying to prove the show to NBC executives, given the low ratings of the first season. Even at this length, there are still some brilliant moments this season. Pembleton's interrogation in "Black and Blue" is one of these moments. The other is the entirety of the season finale (or premire, depending on whether or not you're watching in the producers' intended order), "Bop Gun". The first episode for which David Simon receives a writing credit, "Bop Gun" puts as much focus on the husband of the victim (played by Robin Williams) and the effect the crime has on him as it does on the police investigation. It is my favorite episode of Homicide so far and one of the best episodes I've seen in any police procedural. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/19 Full Review Read all reviews
