Loved most parts of this show, liked some parts and disliked a few things. What I love, is the overarching story and how it concluded. Because a part just before the final two episodes of the show, I was feeling like the story was slightly meandering and I wasn't sure of the point of the show, but the story picks up again and concludes as strong as it opened. Really good show. Mark Ruffalo fans unite! Gorgeous editing also. Thank you!

The acting was superb, and the show had me hooked, until the ending, at the last episode, when it went totally flat, and took a 100% turn from where the show had been heading, which was about two young boys growing up under abuse/sexual abuse. At the beginning, Dominic is narrating how he hated his step-father, and gave a clear picture of abuse, which we are led to believe is why his brother becomes so troubled. As well, there was a clear implication that his grandfather was molesting his own daughter, as well as his mother molesting his own brother. And yet, with both brothers being so screwed up, the writers suddenly turn the show to end like nothing bad happened, and that Dominic and his brother had good parents and a good step-father, and that Dominic should be thankful, and not focus on the abuse, cuz maybe it never happened at all. Totally unrealistic, and it was clear both boys grew up screwed up, and that Dominic was scarred from his past. I felt the writers at the end were watering down, ignoring, or promoting abuse on purpose, especially with the "strange" response at the end by the therapist, like they wanted to give a "free pass" to those who sexually and physically abuse children.

This 6 part HBO limited series is HEAVY stuff - with a bold capital H. If you prefer a little levity with your drama, you might want to look elsewhere. This has mental illness, child abuse, alcoholism, death, car accidents and falling off of ladders. So, if you're in it for the long haul, this is a rewarding and involving drama that deserves to be seen if for no other reason than Ruffalo's remarkable double performance. It's nearly incompressible for the mind to comprehend that the same actor is playing both roles. The basic plot revolves around Dominick Birdsey and his relationship with his mentally challenged twin brother Thomas. Throughout the six episodes, though, we go back to their childhoods, the young life of their grandfather, and Dominick's life with his now-ex wife. The best scenes in the limited series revolve around Dominick's attempts to release Thomas from a mental institution. The acting in these scenes is wonderful, including a successful dramatic turn by O'Donnell. Not everything works quite as well - the scenes with the grandfather could have been condensed, and there is a very awkward performance by Juliette Lewis that thankfully only pops up sporadically in a couple episodes. But if you love family dysfunction as much as I do, this will give you a lot to feast upon. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook)

It has a slow pace, sometimes too slow and BAM something extraordinary happens without a warning. Sometimes is almost painful to watch, to see such suffering and guilt. The main character had a long way to walk through an avalanche of difficulties and he is just a poor human, with mistakes and regrets, but with a good heart. Superb writing and dialogs, very good acting performance. Despite all the drama, at the end is not grim and hopeless.
