Up until recently, fiercely independent Alice spent her life with a laser focus on advancing her career. All of that goes out the window when she meets Ben and he -- along with his three children -- gets her to reconsider her long-held priorities. Her life in upheaval, things get even more disconcerting when Mary, the mentally unbalanced imaginary friend she played with as a child, returns and tries to help her with the transition from a single girl to a family woman. Rachel Dratch provides the voice for Mary.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Imaginary Mary's appealing cast is canceled out by uninspired material and a ridiculous premise whose deficiencies are compounded by an unfunny, ill-advised CGI creature.

Neal Justin Minneapolis Star Tribune The cartoon buddy wears out her welcome after about 31 seconds, but Elfman is plenty animated on her own. Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Verne Gay Newsday Elfman also brings what she usually does, which is the zany, put-upon life force who can't quite get out of her own way. That CGI pompom named Mary serves mostly to constantly remind her of that. The joke grows old fast. Rated: C Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Shirley Li Entertainment Weekly Poor Jenna Elfman, trapped yet again in a lifeless comedy. Rated: C+ Apr 5, 2017 Full Review Roger Catlin rogercatlin.com ABC is casting its comedy lot with these weird animated hybrids, but the better of them, Downward Dog, is yet to come this spring. Mar 29, 2017 Full Review Scott D. Pierce Salt Lake Tribune There's actually a decent sitcom in here... but the imaginary friend is completely unnecessary. It feels like a lame gimmick. The show would be better without it. Mar 29, 2017 Full Review Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media Winning actors and decent gags give a bit of lift to this sweet-natured family comedy, but the "adult with an imaginary friend" storyline hasn't aged well. Audience Member I think it's actually pretty funny. I thought I would hate it, but...it's okay. Give it a chance. :-) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoy the show and the premise of the show. It really didn't need the imaginary friend to be interesting. Just the discomfort of dating a guy with teenage kids is interesting enough. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I love Jenna!! Show is great and I hope it keeps going strong. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Let's ban ABC, Imaginary Mary is TV at its laziest. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Oh my god I love the show it is a very good time and fun to watch it is hilarious and heartwarming gotta love it I love Mary yes she's not a good role model and uses adult subject matter and phrases like. Run kick him in the nuts and run. And I am alive as hell . But I do love it it's laugh out loud funny and cute and very good but I don't think it is suitable for smaller kids due to content listed above i do however think that it is a huge hit with the older kid's if you do let the younger set watch please watch this as a family and discuss the thing that are appropriate jokes and humor and what is not appropriate jokes and humor like I said it's a riot but it just may not be for everyone but I recommend it Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member There's room for improvement so far. Imaginary Mary boosts some impressive CGI work and it has it's humorous moments, but sadly, the technology is buried underneath some less than likable characters and some dull, patchwork writing begging for some energy.
