Blind 20-something Murphy is drifting through life in a haze of drunkenness, and her only friends are her understanding roommate Jess and Tyson, a sweet teenager she met when he saved her from a violent mugging. Murphy's life is turned upside down when, while out for a walk with her guide dog, she stumbles upon what she is certain is Tyson's lifeless body in the alley outside her apartment. When the body disappears by the time the police arrive, and they don't seem inclined to investigate, Murphy clings onto the only thing that can keep her together: figuring out what happened to her friend.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Perry Mattfeld is compelling as an amateur sleuth In the Dark, although the series' recycling of mystery tropes and questionable treatment of physical handicaps may leave some viewers with a dim impression.

Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter The show's entire treatment of blindness comes across as a regressive curiosity made all the more frustrating by the amount of time the show spends humiliating Murphy in the early episodes. Apr 4, 2019 Full Review Caroline Framke Variety In the Dark, to its detriment, is so determined to mash up several cliches into one series that it has real trouble coming together as its own entity. Apr 3, 2019 Full Review Kaitlin Reilly Refinery29 So crushing, and shocking, when the show reveals...the person who killed Murphy... Jul 19, 2019 Full Review Louisa Mellor Den of Geek Good actors like these can only do so much with muddled, unsatisfying plots and thin characterisation. Jul 14, 2019 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette It's welcome to see a blind person who is not a saint. Paula S Your eyes are going to hurt from all the times you roll them because of how unrealistic this whole show is Totally unbelievable. And you’ll get tired of how many times the word “cool” is used. She is supposed to be blind but looks right into peoples eyes while talking and even being quiet but then stumbles to find something she just put down 2 seconds ago. I guess they tried to cover this fact by showing she can see a little bit in the last season. She’s a terrible person but everyone is so taken by her they continue to murder and break the law “ blindingly” following all her dangerous, stupid and illegal tantrums. The show grabs you and I for one kept watching hoping she would get caught and put away. I was disappointed. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/07/25 Full Review Charlie S First couple of seasons started off good but what a complete let down from the middle to the end. Worst series finale ever! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Audience Member I watched it all the way hoping she would actually get what she deserved. I really wanted her to die in the end as she was truly a horrible person. This show just glorifies really bad behavior, utter selfishness, promiscuity, alcoholism, everything that makes a humanity ugly. She had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Waste of my time and this show really should have only lasted one season. I regret wasting my time watching the other seasons but I guess I was naive in believing she would get what she deserved. Awful awful character disgusting show Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review SkyRo P #TVReview #InTheDark #Netflix Seriously if you want something to binge and something to watch this is definitely the show for it. I was completely glued to the television watching season three, I previously already watched season one and two, and now this season three is out it is completely addicting. This show is about a blind girl trying to solve the case, and so much more twists and turns it's not a murder mystery, it's more of a suspenseful thriller television show. It's so amazing. Let's just say I love Murphy and pretzel Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Chad C This review is for the series. The first season started great, good plot, entertaining. Fell off toward the end, but still a good season The rest of the show is terrible. The writing is sophomoric, shallow, and seems to have been written by a 13 year old girl. It is repetitive, with new and boring roadblocks thrown in the plot to keep it going. The blind acting is horrid. It devolved into a predictable, boring teenage soap opera. Had I not been streaming the entire thing, I think I would have stopped watching midway through season 2. Don't waste your time, unless you are a fan of teenage soap operas. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Graso L Writers seem to be lazy about practical situations regarding a blind individual. How many blind people do you run into in your lifetime? Furthermore, how many murders happen right in front of you. A blind person in general population is a ridiculously unimpressive story line. Then this blind person has relations with everyone she comes into contact with….silliness. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
