The loveable but ditzy Joey Tribbiani moves to Hollywood to make it big as an actor, in this spinoff of "Friends." He's also got a sister in town, as well as a supersmart but socially awkward nephew. Assisted by his agent, Bobbie, Joey sets his sites on stardom, unfazed by the speedbumps he hits along the way.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Matt LeBlanc adds a welcome layer of maturity to his iconic character's goofball charm, but there is a nagging sense that Joey was funnier when playing off his friends.

Joy Press Village Voice Almost funny... DeMatteo's playing a similarly attitudinal Italian chick, only this time she's sidekick to her sweet 'n' stupid brother Joey instead of a psychopathic mafia henchman. Surely she deserves better. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Mark Lawson Guardian Both Joey Tribbiani and Matt LeBlanc feel too much like coasters and background clowns to carry a format. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Henrietta Walmark Globe and Mail New York equals neurotic coffee shop habitus; Hollywood equals women flashing their large breasts. How original. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Roger Catlin Hartford Courant Matt LeBlanc sustains his cheerfully dense character... But besides being called upon to say and do the dumbest things, he also occasionally says the kind of snide and sarcastic lines the star of a sitcom would often say, but that Joey never would. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Dan Devine PopMatters Sometimes nuanced, sometimes bombastic, LeBlanc's resilient performance will buy producers some time to fine-tune their approach. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Tom Jicha South Florida Sun-Sentinel Unless LeBlanc's reservoir of affection from Friends is bottomless, thinking long term about this one-trick pony is overly optimistic. Paulina G UNDERRATED. I loved this show so much. When do ever see comedy like this now in 2025. I know that back then it was harshly critiqued because comedy like this was more around. But honestly this show was so funny. I enjoyed it and I wish they made comedy like this still. Joey is the funniest character-the only thing I wish they did was continue for more seasons. Two seasons are not enough. Don't listen to what any review says, watch the trailer and if you see that you would like it watch it and if you do like it come back and rate it a 5/5. That's what I did. The real critics don't know what they talk about 50% what is that! This show ATE. Period. NOTHING ELSE. WATCH THE SHOW and let your opinion influence YOU. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Botev F Joey could never deliver the same type of humor as Friends but for everyone who loved the original, this is a refreshing continuation of the Friends universe! Real fans do love to see more of the beloved characters and Joey delivers 2 amazing seasons of just that! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Matt LeBlanc and Joey Tribbiani are still outstanding, but the writing is hit or miss, and when it hits, it's only rarely at Friends level. Not the real Friends level, but a level if Friends only had one good character. The supporting characters aren't very interesting, except Bobbie, but the actors give good enough performances that you care enough about them by the end of the season. Aside from Matt LeBlanc and Joey Tribbiani, the other standout is Jennifer Coolidge, because obviously. Lucy Liu also had an incredibly memorable turn for three episodes as the hilarious boss on Joey's show! I do wish they had at least one of the Friends guest star. David Schwimmer directed two episodes though! This is a show with an outstanding lead character and performance from its actor, but is surrounded and weighed down by below average writing, supporting characters, pretty much everything.
