What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite an admirable performance from Julianne Moore, Lisey's Story is weighed down by an overreliance on its source material and a sluggish pace.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC Radio (Australia) Will it fill a day's worth of binge-watching? Absolutely. Is it made by some of the most impressive talents working in film and television today? Undoubtedly. Will it go down as one of the series highlights of the year? Sadly, that is very, very unlikely. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 16, 2021 Full Review Scott Bryan BBC.com I really like this. I find it surprising for Apple TV+ to be doing a show like this too. Jun 14, 2021 Full Review Ian Freer Empire Magazine It's perfectly crafted, austere and elliptically put together, but it does little to stir the blood. Rated: 3/5 Jun 9, 2021 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Awards Radar If nothing else, it creates a somewhat fascinating cacophony of parts that are all trying to fit into the same box that they most certainly do not belong in together. Rated: 2/4 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Jenn Adams Rue Morgue Magazine LISEY’S STORY is a testament to love’s ability to endure through sickness and death and proof that even the most troubled hearts can heal with the strength of human connection. Francesca S Watching this series takes all of your concentration and effort to follow a nonsense plot, with fantasy flashbacks and surreal situations you don't know how to position in the story line. Dropped mid second episode, very disappointed as I normally love Stephen King and Julianne Moore. I thought this was the perfect combo, but it was just confusing and frustrating. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Jim D Awful recycling bin of Stephen Kings own tropes: The lone heroine, a story told in flashbacks, a signature villain with signature weapon. Spoiler alert! DeHaan's character uses a pizza cutter as a torture weapon (presumably because they sell uncut pizzas in Maine). Add the fact that SK is so anti-gun, that he has his heroine intentionally opts for a shovel instead of a firearm for protection. Help from a dead guardian angel, miracle curing water, and finally a drawing of three to unite against the villain. It's a rehash of bits from the Shining, Pet Sematary, the Stand, and so many others. I loved King's early work- but this is all too familiar, but kind of like a knock off of others. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Montgomery M Really interesting and pretty. The plot is great. The problem is the pacing could be quite boring and slow. Good acting and some great moments though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Dakota D I normally love Stephen King, but lately he is losing his touch - at least on film. I did not read this book, but the tv show was ridiculous and laborious to watch. I literally was bored....the cast was a wonderful cast NORMALLY...none better, but were wasted in this boring go no where and makes no sense story of stereotypical tropes on ignorance, poverty, familial violence and inbreeding that appears a lot in King's stories. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Michael C Marvelous!! Very impressed with this adaptation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/20/22 Full Review Audience Member Lisey's Story is one of my favorite books from one of my favorite authors and this adaptation is maybe even better than the novel. It's a beautiful, haunting and very disturbing love story, with terrific writing (by the master himself), acting, directing, with fantastic music and stunning cinematography. It's a slow burn but well worth watching every minute of it. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
