What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masters of Horror is a skin-crawling anthology series with a higher quotient of hits than misses, although some viewers may feel that these splatter-filled installments are not as ambitious as the series' title promises.

Brian Tallerico New York Magazine/Vulture It's difficult to choose only one episode of this underrated Showtime anthology series... When all else fails, though, it's worth trusting the true master of horror, John Carpenter. Dec 8, 2018 Full Review Daniel Fienberg Zap2it.com Featured at least as many misses as hits, films that delivered slap-dash gore rather than anything truly disturbing. Dec 8, 2018 Full Review Nick Schager Slant Magazine Talented filmmakers working on material from genre aficionados, yielding uneven results... If the final product wasn't always the galvanizing return to form we'd hoped for, at least it keeps these directors in the game. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 8, 2018 Full Review Michael Drucker IGN Movies Takes the common tropes and clichés of a horror movie and turns them around without feeling like a parody. Rated: 10/10 Dec 8, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele L.A. Weekly It's been a mixed bag, but this Friday the series unveils a real doozy: Joe Dante's wry and uncompromising zombie satire "Homecoming." Dec 8, 2018 Full Review Bill Gibron PopMatters The hoped-for resurrection of in-your-face frights is still a couple of corpses away. Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Richard W The very first episode incident on mtn road is awesome, episode 4 jennifer is really good ,i havent finished all of it ,season one and season 2 ,but so far this is a really good series if you are a horror buff Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Damian M Some of the greatest minds in horror cinema, directing hour long short films tobe put together in one show.?! Just watched Episode 13 (Imprint-Takashi Miike), originally banned from airing on t.v do to its dark and twisted story , Miike refused to change his script and holy. This anthology really shows the talents of each director and there passion for the craft, and I cannot wait to watch another episode Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Andrew Joe D Awesome! Some of the best names in horror do amazing jobs directing 1 hour films adapted from short stories. The best is the first: "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road." As good as horror gets! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Sean S To be fair, I only watched the first three of these in the Season 1. Episode 1 was ok...it got better near the end, then turned out kind of goofy. Episode 2 was a H.P. Lovecraft story that was pretty good. Episode 3 by Toby Hopper was kind of poorly done coming from someone who has done some scary stuff early in his career. From watching the first three episodes, I give this the top rating in the category of "Meh, it passed the time." I might try to watch the other episodes down the road. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Steven W the real masters of the dark direct masterfull stories vetter that horror film directors today where its cheap thrills and are unmembriable Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/20 Full Review Audience Member Not that old but definitely shows its age. The segments weren't as good as I had hoped for considering the heavy hitter directors. But more often than not the segments had a nice interesting plot.
