1962 is the worst of times, but also the best of times for Oliver Beene, an 11-year-old whose world is full of comedic chaos. Oliver's eccentric family is headed by his father, Jerry, a dentist whose idea of a fun and relaxing Sunday is drilling his kids' molars. Then there's Oliver's mother, Charlotte, a homemaker who idolizes Jackie Kennedy and fantasizes about being her. The Beene household is rounded out by older brother Ted, a sports fanatic who lives by one simple rule: "If it ain't about sports, it ain't worth talking about." This is exactly why he and Oliver haven't spoken in four years.

Jan 1, 2020 Full Review Steve Johnson Chicago Tribune The writing, in this series guided by Howard Gewirtz and Steven Levitan, isn't up to its surroundings. Jan 1, 2020 Full Review Scott D. Pierce Deseret News (Salt Lake City) Autobiographical or not, Oliver Beene doesn't ring true -- it's just too mean-spirited to be believable. Jan 1, 2020 Full Review M.S. Mason Christian Science Monitor Two parts Malcolm in the Middle, one part The Wonder Years, it's entirely tasteless and tedious. Jan 1, 2020 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Oliver Beene breaks no new comedic ground, but when its focus is on the children, it's an amusing half-hour.
