Critics Consensus

Orange Is the New Black's fifth season offers up more of the sharp writing and dizzying tonal juggling acts that fans expect - albeit somewhat less successfully.

Jul 30, 2019 Full Review Arielle Bernstein Salon.com One of the most powerful things that this season of "Orange is the New Black" accomplishes is its depiction of mentally ill women as complete people who are just as capable of growth, change, kindness and compassion as anyone else. Pathetic b This season is mostly directionless filler. Whatever coherency there was was lost in the edit. Which seems to have been done by someone high on everything except concentration. Or maybe it was just one script written by five different people. In light of the previous seasons, awful. And the character of suzanne has become annoying as hell. The amount of damage she causes(and will continue to in further episodes) and the amount of screentime and love she gets in comparison to someone like the character of Lolly(who is established in a vastly more believable and interesting way) is... very, very, very, very unbelievable. And doesn't help the show at all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Brijosh I Worst season .. such a torture to finish 13 episodes . Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Óscar B I don't understand why some people don't like this season. The character development is excellent, the back and forth of inmates leaving their differences behind and then going back to being who they are. Great season. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review payton r This show has been amazing up to this point. Somehow this season was nothing but filler while it attempted to make the most critical statement the show has been building up to. This season had the potential to be epic and touch on multiple injustices within the prison industrial complex. This season could’ve cemented this show as one of the best/most important shows in recent memory. However the pandering and plot lines that fell out of touch with reality made the season fall incredibly flat. I was either bored out of my skull or annoyed the whole time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/18/22 Full Review diane h I liked seasons one through four, but season five is tedious. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
