Jack the Ripper was a serial killer who butchered a number of women in and around the Whitechapel District of London in 1888. This drama begins about six months after the final murder, with now-peaceful East London hoping that the reign of terror is over. Among the hopeful are members of H Division, the police precinct tasked with keeping order in the district, including Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, a forward-thinking detective haunted by a past mistake that ended in tragedy. While trying to keep order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel, Reid is soon drawn into the seedy criminal underworld of Victorian London, where each new murder elicits fear that the Ripper may be back.

Nawt W For anyone gravitating to this series because they think this has anything to do with the fictionalized hunt for Jack the Ripper, well, it doesn't. If truth be told, outside of the first and last episodes, plus a few in between, the series barely mentions him at all. This show is more about the small steps taken in the adaptation and evolution of police procedurals in Victorian England, or Whitechapel specifically. From databases to rudimental forensics, it is riveting to watch the progression from season one, where the preferred method of extracting testimonies from suspects is tying them to a chair and beating the living shit out of them, to season five, where they are tying suspects to their victims through scientific methods. The characters are enthralling and infuriating in a good way. The first season might be really barren for good character writing aside from episode 5. Nevertheless, if you stick with the series, you will be observing one of the most conflicted and well-written sets of characters a period drama could come up with. They are not just detectives with no personalities or growth in the police force at the end of the 19th century. Their lives are fully explored, and their numerous mistakes and sins are laid bare. This goes beyond just the main characters. The supporting characters also go from being "some guy in a police station" to having some of the most gut-wrenching arcs in the show. Almost no character is wasted. All this is accompanied by a final tying knot - the dialogue. The Victorian-era way of speaking that doesn't actually remove vulgarity gives every scene so much more eloquence and weight.
