In this contemporary version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories, Dr. John Watson is a war vet just home from Afghanistan. He meets the brilliant but eccentric Holmes when the latter, who serves as a consultant to Scotland Yard, advertises for a flatmate. Almost as soon as Watson moves into the Baker Street flat, they are embroiled in mysteries, and Sherlock's nemesis, Moriarty, appears to have a hand in the crimes.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Smart, unpredictable, and terrifically written, Sherlock puts a contemporary spin on the legendary detective, thanks in part to a commanding lead performance from Benedict Cumberbatch.

Alyssa Rosenberg The Atlantic Sherlock demonstrates, bringing Holmes and Watson into the 21st century ought to have been, well, elementary. Apr 4, 2019 Full Review Suzi Feay Financial Times All right, the dangling ending was corny, Moriarty unveiled was just silly and I could do without the nudge-nudge hints of gay goings-on, but Gatiss's finale was spectacular, and he makes a horribly creepy Mycroft to boot. Sep 10, 2018 Full Review Serena Davies Daily Telegraph (UK) Sherlock worked because it was having fun. It also let down the po-faced pretence that the suffocating abundance of TV detective shows often labour under: that the detective actually cares about the victims. Feb 17, 2017 Full Review Kanishk Devgan Film Companion Its compelling take on the titular character, with a star-making performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, will feel reminiscent of the modern-day, rocambolesque capers of Assane. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher The cleverness of the writing, the charm of Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson, the wit of the visuals, the sheer all-encompassing magnificence of it... Everything about it is perfect. Even the score is amazing. Apr 8, 2019 Full Review Melissa Crawley The Patriot Ledger The expert sleuthing remains, but everything else about this three-part series has been stylishly updated to produce a fun, smart and entertaining drama. Troy R Always liked the other sherlock tv show (elementary) so I always had a dislike for the BBC one as I felt the two clashed for tv air time. However once I watched it I enjoyed the heck out of it and Cumberbatch's performance. A very typical smart guy role that he does well in. I do dislike that they tend to avoid talking about the drug usage sherlock holmes is typically know for, but they do touch on it here and there. Martin Freeman is also great as Watson. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review Pauline W All five seasons. Watch them all. Brilliant interpretation of Sherlock. Supremely arrogant Sherlock but with a warmth that then surprises, compelling watching. All the characters are perfectly cast. Just love it. My kids loved it too. Must watch. Have watched it twice, all of it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Amir S It's something refreshing and good. The ending is just a crazy bomb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Diana P I love Cumberbatch, but this show absolutely ruined Sherlock Holmes for me. I will never watch anybody’s version again. Just ruined. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review nico r This was by far the most disappointing show i have ever watched. I love Martin Freeman and even though I think Benedict Cumberbatch is way overrated I was expecting something decent. This is a pile of nonsense from start to end. None of the "investigations" make any sense and basically everything falls randomly into place. People die then come back from the dead with a bullshit explanation. It was exhausting to watch. Then looking at many reviews on several platforms rating it excellent I could not help but notice 99% of them were from India. Nearly as if someone had paid people to improve ratings.
