Critics Consensus

Smallville's modern re-telling of the Superman saga benefits from a focus on teen angst and small-town drama instead of comic book camp.

James Poniewozik TIME Magazine There is a lot of corn in Smallville, Kans., and some of it finds its way into the script. But the series rethinks familiar Superman motifs in fresh ways. Feb 13, 2020 Full Review Belinda Acosta Austin Chronicle Fine acting and appealing performers like Tom Welling as the young Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as the comely Lana Lang, and a young Lex Luthor played with beady-eyed shiftiness by Michael Rosenbaum, make this appointment television for fans. Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Peter Bowes BBC.com It is, in effect, another soap about pretty young people. The story gets bogged down in a sentimental boy-girl storyline. Feb 6, 2020 Full Review Irish Times Staff Irish Times Moral simplicities were underscored with acting that reeked of pork. Feb 13, 2020 Full Review Wm. Steven Humphrey The Stranger (Seattle, WA) The downside of Smallville is that the writing SUCKS. Feb 13, 2020 Full Review Frances Grant New Zealand Herald Smallville is no primary-coloured comicbook town but a place of supernaturally glowing cornfields and deep mystical shadows. It also looks set to boast an impressive range of X-Files-ish villains. Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Landon G Season 1 of Smallville was great i like how you get to see superman like never before where he grows up and goes to highschool while dealing with metor freeks Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review Tyler L Great first season to w great show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Clover G Smallville Season 1 Review: A Heartfelt Beginning Rating: 83% There’s something magical about watching Smallville Season 1. From the very first episode, it pulls you into Clark Kent’s world, showing the relatable struggles of a teenager trying to find his place while hiding the secret of his extraordinary abilities. The show’s real strength lies in its characters, particularly Clark and Lana. Their chemistry is undeniable, and every interaction between them feels layered with longing and unspoken feelings. Watching Clark navigate his feelings for Lana while keeping his secrets adds so much heart to the story, and Kristin Kreuk’s portrayal of Lana brings warmth and depth to a character who could have easily been one-dimensional. Together, they make Clana a central emotional thread that makes this season unforgettable. What I also love about Season 1 is how it perfectly blends the familiar with the extraordinary. The meteor rock “freak of the week” formula keeps things exciting, and while it can feel a bit repetitive, it serves as a perfect backdrop to Clark’s personal growth. The bond between Clark and Lex is another highlight, hinting at the tragedy of their future rivalry while making their friendship feel so genuine. Sure, some episodes slow down the momentum, but they’re balanced by moments of real emotional impact and thrilling action. For me, this season feels like the perfect introduction to Clark’s journey—it’s heartfelt, filled with hope, and grounded in relationships that keep you invested every step of the way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Ed R Brilliant start to an incredible series about the Super Man origin. Ahead of its time! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Wyatt C not a bad start but the cliffhanger at the end god dam i hate cliffhangers Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Person 1 Pretty decent season. Effects a little dated but overall interesting and good background TV while you do other stuff or just as a relatively light-hearted distraction. Somewhat similar in feel to Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the same era - although Smallville lacks the humor it still has its own charm. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
