Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.

The sets are brighter, the dialogue is sharper, with more expletives than expected from the elders as well as the kids, and the character development is strong across the board. Go to Full Review

“Starfleet Academy” is not a particularly serious story... When the show wants to be funny, though, it is. Go to Full Review

A promising collection of characters and storylines just setting the table for future achievement, not quite ready to prove its value beyond the legends of Kirk and Spock. Go to Full Review

Are the costumes and aliens sometimes way ridiculous? Absolutely. Does it have enough heart to sustain us another 50 years? You know it does. I loved this show. I had so much fun watching it. Go to Full Review

The incredibly diverse, multi-species nature of the interplanetary characters seems right in step with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s original vision for the series. Go to Full Review

Julian B @Julianhasthecon 21h Starfleet Academy is at its best when this cast and crew all come together, whether that’s through legitimate ensemble episodes where they are all working together to solve a problem, whether it’s rallying behind Klingon cadet Jay-Den (Karim Diane), or helping SAM (Kerrice Brooks) work through what it means to be a photonic in a flesh & blood world as well as a representative for her people, the Kasqians. When Starfleet Academy was first announced, I know that a lot of us were expecting the show to be exactly this; an ensemble piece that gives a focus on the daily life of what it means to be a cadet at Starfleet Academy in a galaxy that is still in the process of rebuilding. Kerrice Brooks as SAM brings such energy to Academy that I don’t think we’ve seen for a very long time. Almost Data-like in nature, but with pure joy and emotion. See more Antony @Thatsamores 22h Starfleet Academy, like all Star Trek shows, starts short of its full potential as the characters are introduced and the ensemble takes shape. Historically, Star Trek has lived through its interpersonal relationships, with science and technology coming a close second. For me, that has always been the real draw. This show finds that balance. At its heart, Starfleet Academy feels rooted in the foundation of Trek. Even within the first two episodes, you can see the groundwork being laid. In this new era of streaming, as Star Trek finds its footing again in a future setting, this show feels like a testing ground where those roots are being planted. Right now, the series is in its infancy and still finding its way, which is true of many great Trek shows before it. I believe that a season from now, Starfleet Academy will be one of the most talked-about shows on streaming. My hope is that Paramount gives it time to slow cook, because all the ingredients are here for something special. See more Heather S @yallternative_nerd 23h I was a bit skeptical going in since I don’t always enjoy teen centered shows. in fact I don’t 99% of the time. I am a diehard Trekkie thru & thru tho &went in w cautious optimism. From the very first episode they had me on board! No pun intended lol I immediately fell in love w Kraag & the holographic cadet! But every character is so good & I can’t wait to see them develop &grow &graduate! Dang, even thinking about that future episode already has me beaming w pride for "my"cadets! I am thrilled to have the Doctor back bc he is one of my all time favorite Star Trek characters! What a joy to see him on screen again ❤️ I love that we have Tig Notaro back as Jet Reno. Thoroughly enjoying starfleet academy & we are excited for every episode. It is really embracing Genes vision for an optimistic future. Yes things are dif at this point after the burn & starfleet is rebuilding & reacquainting itself with its ethics &mission, but it is exciting to see them go through that process See more 23h It’s not your father’s Star Trek—and that’s good. Star Trek is always a mirror of the times in which it’s made: the hopeful 60’s, the stable 80s/90s, the shakiness of the early 2000s and now being on the edge of a dystopian reality. Young adults viewers of TOS are octogenarians now and Trek needs new fans. This show is aimed at Gen Z and Gen Alpha but it still has its heart in the Trek tradition of people striving for a better future. See more John B. @Akbrowncoat 23h It’s just awful. Treks equivalent to Star Wars Acolyte. Hard pass. See more Bradley W @Seperatedout 1d So I have been a Star Trek fan for a very long time and I absolutely love this show. I think the show has lots to offer for young people as well as older people and I think it's got really wholesome storylines! Obviously we only have four episodes at the moment. But I do think that as the series progresses, it will continue to be just as amazing. I love the character progression and I absolutely love the actors that they chosen to play the characters. I know the show has received some bad criticism so far, but I assume this is from the type of Star Trek fans who didn't like the next generation when that first released. Star Trek has always been very woke and I am glad that this series is continuing to do all the things that Star Trek has always done. LLAP See more Read all reviews
