Susan Keane is a beautiful magazine writer whose weekly column, "Suddenly Susan," reflects her struggles as a single woman in San Francisco after abruptly leaving her fiance at the altar. Her boss (and nearly brother-in-law), Jack Richmond, tries to be professional as he battles the attraction between them. Susan's other co-workers include photographer Luis, restaurant critic Vicki and, in later seasons, investigative reporter Maddy (Susan's old enemy). Susan's grandmother and confidant, Nana, is a pillar of encouragement for her in her otherwise hectic life.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Comedic inspiration doesn't spark Suddenly for this Susan, hampered by derivative gags that undermine Brooke Shields' energetic performance.

Tom Shales Washington Post Brooke Shields does everything but hang by her teeth from the Golden Gate Bridge on the premiere of Suddenly Susan, but at best her shenanigans are merely diverting. Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Newsweek Staff Newsweek Brooke has a goofy gift for physical comedy. Noted comic actor Judd Nelson has also been recruited to save the day. Shockingly, he's pretty good as Brooke's editor boss at a San Francisco paper. Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Caryn James New York Times Like its lead character, 'Suddenly Susan has no identity of its own. The beauty of the magic time slot is that it gives Suddenly Susan, with its engaging star and flexible format, a well-deserved chance to grow. Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Rick Kushman Sacramento Bee The other sure hit of the season, along with Spin City. Shields is a surprisingly funny comedian. Judd Nelson as her boss, almost as surprisingly, is funny, too. Rated: 3/4 Oct 21, 2021 Full Review Kay McFadden Charlotte Observer You may be surprised to discover Shields' talent for comedy; whether that can or should carry a show with bad writing is another story. Rated: C+ Oct 14, 2021 Full Review Tom Jicha South Florida Sun-Sentinel Shields is irresistible. Her comedic timing is raw and her movements are sometimes wooden, but she is a magnetic presence on the screen. Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
