In the 1980s, geeky Adam uses a video camera to document his family's crazy life. His mother, Beverly, is overprotective and lacks boundaries, while his dad has a hot temper and finds it difficult to parent without screaming. Rounding out the clan are Adam's terrifying sister, Erica; his older brother, Barry, who has middle-child syndrome; and the family's beloved grandfather, Al "Pops" Solomon. Pops is responsible for wild antics, including offering drinks to Barry and teaching Adam about the ways of love -- which create more chaos in an already high-strung family.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Goldbergs is at times too reliant on gimmicky references to 1980s pop culture, but it's also sweet, sincere, and occasionally very funny.

Ellen E Jones Independent (UK) My advice? Keep it muted until at least episode seven. Apr 20, 2015 Full Review Ryan McGee AV Club What may have started out as a way for a creator to pay tribute to the childhood that inspired the show has transformed into a tribute to the types of comedies many current viewers grew up on. Rated: B+ Nov 25, 2013 Full Review Dorothy Rabinowitz Wall Street Journal Unblinking sincerity has, alas, squashed Mr. Garlin's particular form of grandeur. Oct 8, 2013 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media What's most disturbing about The Goldbergs is not how unfunny it is or how broad and obvious its 1980's references are, but in just how mean it is. Rated: F Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Terence Johnson AwardsCircuit.com The ensemble is pitch perfect. Rated: 4/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Anthony Ocasio Screen Rant While it may be a few weeks before Garlin settles into his character (it is the pilot, after all), there's more than enough reason to give The Goldberg's a watch - and not just because of all the REO Speedwagon songs. Andrew T A hilarious amazing season which grows more and more iconic as you go through the rest of the show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Jay W A TV Series that goes on as long as "The Goldbergs" can be difficult to review. With 229 episodes, the quality and humor from one episode to the next would vary drastically. As much as the quality may vary, the story beats would frustratingly stay the same. Just about every episode would follow the same formula and by the 10th season, the routine got old. Each episode would have one of the characters doing something selfish at the expense of another character. Other characters would comedically point out the problems with their plan only to have them be ignored. Before the second commercial break the plan would have been foiled, a sad saxophone plays, and the characters feel bad for their selfish decision. The for the third act the characters would apologize, hug it out and an 80's pop song would play. Lather, rinse, repeat that's the show. A formula for a show can work. These characters are all being played by talented funny actors, they are able to sell a joke well. But, depending on the writer, these same characters could be obnoxious, stupid and selfish. With it being a status-quo type show, the characters don't feel like they learn or grow from the beginning of one episode to the end. With this formula, the show became to unravel over a period of time. As the story began, "The Goldbergs" was roughly based on true events from Adam Goldberg's life. Each episode would conclude with some home video footage showing how their story compared to reality. This helped the show feel grounded and personal. It was a nice touch. By the 10th season the show stopped doing that, and even had to include the disclaimer: "Not based on actual events". There is some distracting behind the scenes drama by the 9th season. The father of the show, Jeff Garlin, gets cancelled and is written out of the show in a real obvious way. Between that time, they even have an uncanny CGI stand in for his character. George Segal passes away after the 8th season and they do a more heartwarming send off for him. They bring in Judd Hirsch to replace his role as the other grandpa. It's not this decades "Wonder Years" but there are some funny jokes told by some funny actors. The series would also have some creative 80's reunions in the show. Freddy Kreuger, Highlander, Cheers and Knight Rider all make appearances on the show. I don't recommend watching it from beginning to end, but if the show is on, there are laughs to be had. It may not be Gold, but it is a solid Bronze. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Alexis G 1st season hilarious with murray and barry goldberg Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review Timothy S Not unlike many shows that I've come before like young Sheldon and others. This show is absolutely terrible. The acting and the plot if you can even call it that is awful. There's absolutely nothing funny about the show. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/26/23 Full Review Tyler K Fun series of 80s nostalgia that is nonstop hilarious 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/18/22 Full Review Tim This is one of the best first seasons of a show ever. New age Boy Meets World or Wonder Years. The cast is amazing and chemistry is uncanny. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/23/22 Full Review Read all reviews
