This adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's final unfinished novel is set in 1930s Hollywood, an era darkened by the Depression and the growing influence of Hitler. Written and directed by Billy Ray, the series centers on Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer), a handsome and talented studio executive whose career is on the rise. As Stahr struggles to gain a firm foothold in the movie industry and bring his cinematic visions to life, he must navigate a power struggle with Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer), his boss and mentor.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

This old-fashioned tour through F. Scott Fitzgerald's vision of Hollywood has lush production values and an attractive varnish of glamorous pedigree, but lacks a storytelling hook or a compelling character to latch onto - resulting in an inert bauble that is pleasing to look at but elusive to feel.

Allison Keene Collider The series acutely feels like an idea that would have made for a good movie, instead of being stretched to a breaking point to make it work for TV. Rated: 2/5 Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Daniel D'Addario TIME Magazine A diverting series that uses history the way revelers at a Gatsby-themed party today use a strand of fake pearls... It's a missed opportunity. One that, after a gorgeous 10 hours, you may not remember. Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Ellen Gray Philadelphia Inquirer The melodrama is largely focused on the people inside and on an industry that's always been in love with itself. It's not a perfect show, but it's a pretty perfect binge-watch, if that's how you choose to do it. Mar 1, 2019 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Although the issues raised by The Last Tycoon ... are dealt with unsatisfactorily ... it is possible that Bezos, Price and company were made uncomfortable by the thought of these questions being placed before a wide audience. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Dave Nemetz TV Line The Last Tycoon has all the glamorous trappings of old Hollywood: Amazon clearly threw lots of money at the screen, with sumptuous costumes by Mad Men designer Janie Bryant. But the joy is missing. Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Christopher James AwardsCircuit.com While the period details are exquisite throughout "The Last Tycoon," the conflict doesn't jump off the screen quite like the costumes. Paul S A captivating drama taking place during a time in our history that has the glitzy movie star scene taking place during the Great Depression. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Audience Member It is great to finally see a streaming show well made with excellent camera work, acting, and lighting. We have become accustomed to rushed single-camera work. The props, costumes, and period work are great. The acting is good and the plot palatable. I am however not surprised it did not get renewed, it was getting a little slow and I found myself wanting to fast forward to an end. Unfortunately, the ending seemed like what was a last-minute decision or perhaps a cliffhanger, it was perhaps the most disappointing part of the series. Overall I found it cinematically superior to most of the work of modern streaming series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I love the show and am so disappointed it was not renewed for another season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Really liked Matt Bomer in this series. He is a brilliant actor. And the rest of the cast was also very good. Enjoyed the season every bit. The sets and the costumes were amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review mike p If you enjoy watching beautiful people in an early hollywood period piece, this is for you. The cast is excellent, but F Scott Fitzgerald based storyline is, of course, dated and some of the dialogue is superficial and hilarious. Too bad, because Kelsey Grammer, Rosemary DeWitt and especially Matt Bomer entertain us and carry the first season very well despite the spoken dialogue which is often pretentious and overreaching. Less could've been a lot more for the "Last Tycoon" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Not good, certainly not an improvement on the Elia Kazan 1976 movie. Although both suffer from a lack of realism with regards to the Stahr character. His physical vulnerability needs to be in the casting. He couldn't be a superman, not physically if he is based on Irving Thalberg? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
