Ronny McCarthy wants nothing more than to move away from his sports-crazed Boston family and hit the singles scene in search of a partner, but when his politically incorrect, outspoken father taps him to be the high-school assistant basketball coach instead of his more-athletic -- and straight -- siblings, he is touched by the gesture and rethinks his plans. With a new perspective, Ronny decides to embark on a different path, and he can be sure his tight-knit family will have plenty to say about it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The McCarthys is a semi-successful attempt at a throwback sitcom with above-par performances, but its broad stereotypes and lack of a unique point of view also make it semi-forgettable.

Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe I'm becoming a fan of this sitcom, despite the fact that it's a series of hit-or-miss one-liners with an obtrusive laugh track. Dec 4, 2014 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times How much enjoyment you get out of The McCarthys will depend on your tolerance for badly rendered Boston accents and whether you've maxxed out on gay-centric sitcoms that traffic in clichés. Nov 11, 2014 Full Review Joanne Ostrow Denver Post Full of heart as well as laughs, this panel cements the feeling that this is one of the better comedy pilots of the season. Nov 11, 2014 Full Review Andy Swift TV Line The sitcom's greatest strength is in the interactions between Metcalf and Ritter, whose mother-son bond is as unnerving as it is hysterical. Nov 11, 2014 Full Review Dave Walker Times-Picayune It's too big and overly broad to the point of clumsy and crude. Nov 11, 2014 Full Review Kristin Dos Santos E! Online The jokes are awkward, stereotypical and predictable, the multi-cam setup feels archaic (did I just change the channel to 1982?), and I quite honestly cringed the whole way through. Audience Member I couldn't wait to see The McCarthy's because I love Laurie Metcalf on anything she does, but this time I'm disappointed – not in her, but in the stereotypical writing and shallow self indulgent loud characters. Each night they are all lined up on the couch and chairs, same position, same shallow parts. Aren't there other rooms in the house, and don't the kids all have their own lives that just may coincide with their parents once in a while, not every night lined up like ducks to shoot (which I would love to do). There is no depth of character or setup for this sitcom, so it's no surprise that it is failing. The reason Roseanne worked so well is that it worked like a real family, using every room, showing real character, real life. Laurie, I'm sorry this show doesn't illuminate your acting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Hilarious show. Please bring it back! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm glad I'm writing this review now, because I wouldn't have been able to say this was a better "The Real O'Neals" last year! This show has a lot of laughs, great characters, and excellent performances from their actors. My biggest thought is that it wouldn't have been cancelled if it wasn't on CBS. And, if they had renewed it, it would have grown and gotten better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Thankfully CBS had the good sense to yank this show from its lineup. No programming value unless you are watching it after a sports game. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I cannot understand why this show has any negative reviews at all. It is my absolute favorite sitcom this season! Its heartwarming family focus is such a refreshing change from all of the more crude/profane shows on TV these days. Its originality and unique plot make it a family show for the 21st century. Metcalf and Ritter are my favorites, but I love the rest of the cast as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Funniest show on TV' I don't get how people rate! Mike Tyson gets an 82! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
