In addition to her role as creator and executive producer of this mind-bending series, Brit Marling also plays the role of Prairie Johnson, a young woman who returns home after a 7-year disappearance. Her sudden return is not the only miraculous occurrence: everyone is shocked to learn that Prairie is no longer blind. While the FBI and her parents are anxious to discuss Prairie's disappearance, she won't talk about what happened during the time that she was missing. Zal Batmanglij, the co-creator and an executive producer of the series, is the director of every episode.

Emily St. James Vox The OA is kind of genius, while simultaneously being incredibly silly. And you know what? I love it! I love its goofy, loopy vibe. Rated: 4/5 Apr 18, 2019 Full Review Esther Zuckerman Thrillist The sequence with Old Night is what The OA does best. At first the scene is stunning, almost laughable, in its sheer oddity, but then the mood morphs, as it pulsates with existential terror and a sort of unnerving sexuality. Apr 18, 2019 Full Review Rachel Syme The New Republic I wish more television was this unafraid to leave its audience fumbling for understanding. Mar 29, 2019 Full Review Jennifer Bisset CNET It glues itself together with realistic, loyal characters bonded by their harrowing shared ordeals. There's even a believable love story, a flicker of warmth amid the creepy science, cryptic puzzles and trippy imagery. Apr 6, 2023 Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies Episode 41: Best of 2019 So Far Rated: 95/100 Oct 4, 2021 Full Review Jo Berry Digital Spy [The OA] manages to be stranger, more puzzling and even more addictively demented than the first season. Audience Member I liked season 1, but season 2 turned into an endless puzzle box. I bailed out at episode 5 near the beginning. I dislike things like this - things that just happen and happen without purpose or clarity. In all drama there needs to be some feeling of moving towards closure. Instead, this just seems to telegraph no interest in resolution - as if it will never reach a quiesce point. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Andrii K Amazing movie, it's a bummer Netflix cancelled it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Kristine A First of all, I truly don’t understand why have such hate in their reviews and start calling people names for enjoying a show. I know it’s called Rotten Tomatoes, but you don’t have to BE rotten. It’s just a show — chill !! In any case, like many, I truly enjoyed this show. I understand that it might not be everyone’s favorite, but that’s the beauty of having different interests! If you enjoy deep thinking, psychological shows about other dimensions, this is the show for you! I will say I think I liked the first season better, but maybe that’s just because I felt more connected to the characters all being in the same dimension together. And the setup was so interesting! I thought the ending was good, but I would’ve liked more of a satisfying ending for HAP. That’s just me hating when murderers and abusers win, though. If you end up watching it, I hope you enjoy it! And if you don’t, realize that not everyone is like YOU !! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Theresa M Personally I struggled through the first season. I was intrigued by the story, but the storytelling was wonky and incoherent. The second is so much better. I wish we would have gotten at least a third season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Kalissa H Season two is really good, on a much grander scale than season one. I prefer season one, but season two is really great. I do think season two could’ve been longer to flesh the storylines out more. Unfortunately, there is a season three set up that we won’t get to see. Overall, this show is phenomenal and 100% worth watching. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Mawethu S A Mind-Bending Masterpiece: The OA Season 2 Soars Beyond the Unknown: The OA's second season is an utterly mesmerising dive into uncharted storytelling, turning the slow-burn brilliance of its first season into a fully realised, multi-dimensional narrative. After binge-watching both seasons over the last two days, it’s clear that what began as a tantalising mystery has evolved into a truly daring and genre-defying work of art. Where the first season felt like an ambitious, albeit slightly experimental, pilot episode, the second elevates the entire series. With a larger budget and more narrative complexity, The OA transforms its moments of deliberate absurdity into intricate, carefully plotted storylines that challenge and reward the viewer. It’s a series that boldly asks: “How far are you willing to stretch your imagination?” The beauty of The OA lies in its ability to achieve so much without resorting to the usual sci-fi pomp. It doesn’t rely on flying cars, magic spells, or over-the-top action scenes. Instead, it builds a world of wonder and excitement through meticulous plot development, emotionally resonant performances, and a profound sense of curiosity. Special recognition must go to the creators, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, for crafting something that defies conventional genres while remaining emotionally grounded. They deserve a standing ovation for their uncompromising vision. Equally deserving of praise is the cast, who fully commit to their roles, embodying the show’s peculiar energy with sincerity and depth. The second season’s conclusion is both satisfying and tantalising, leaving you with a sense of closure while still hungry for more. In many ways, that is The OA’s ultimate trick—it answers enough to keep you hooked, but always leaves you questioning what’s real, what’s possible, and what could come next. If you're looking for sci-fi that dares to be different and isn’t afraid to break the rules, The OA is an unforgettable experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
