      Season 1 – The Office

      2005 Comedy List
71% 41 Reviews Tomatometer 81% 250+ Ratings Audience Score This U.S. adaptation -- set at a paper company based in Scranton, Pa. -- has a similar documentary style to that of the Ricky Gervais-led British original. It features the Dunder-Mifflin staff, which includes characters based on roles in the British show -- and, quite possibly, people with whom you work in your office. There's Jim, the likable employee who's a bit of an every man. Jim has a thing for receptionist-turned-sales-rep Pam -- because office romances are always a good idea! There's also Dwight, the co-worker who is successful but devoid of social skills and common sense. Read More Read Less Watch on Peacock Stream Now

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Office quickly distinguishes itself from its source material within the first few episodes, proving not all Hollywood remakes of overseas hits are destined to end in failure. (That's what she said.)

Max W The first two episodes retain traces of adaptation, but the subsequent ones mostly veer towards creating new content in line with the British version's style. Although the American version of The Office has yet to establish its unique identity in the first season, there is hope for it to carve out its distinct style creatively. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Flobine Pas la meilleure saison, mais toute la table est mise pour le reste de la série. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review Sarah Caroline B Starts off awkwardly irreverent but gains depth over time. Those who resonate with its workplace humor might find it somewhat disheartening. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review sachin j Very funny, Steve Carell is amazing as Michael Scott, Must Watch Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/23 Full Review Randall D This show started out so bad. Now, I understand it needed the time to establish relationships with the characters and that almost every season after was incredible, that does not mean I will adjust my score. I still couldn't make it through all episodes of this season, just like seasons 8 and 9. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Jonathan P I love the season 1 cringe. It's raw and hilarious Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Paul Hoggart Times (UK) It's broader and less understated, especially in Steve Carell's Michael Scott, who lacks the terror behind David Brent's eyes. Yet the new American material is generally as funny as the original. Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Austin Smith New York Post If you are like me, and somehow never managed to catch the original, Carell and his American "Office"-mates are just fine. Rated: 3/4 Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Dana Stevens Slate The harder it tries (and even, at times, succeeds) in amusing us, the more melancholic we'll feel, remembering how magical things used to be. Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Betsy Bozdech DVDJournal.com It requires a high tolerance for watching other people put themselves into impossible situations - and then make them worse. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 8, 2022 Full Review Kathryn Reklis The Christian Century As more people are required to surrender more parts of their lives to work, whether it is a dream job or not, there may be collective nostalgia for the monotony of a stable job... Aug 27, 2021 Full Review Travis Fickett IGN Movies As a pilot, this one is largely a failure. However, as an initial effort to bring the universal comedy of the original and its take on the workplace -- it works. Rated: 6.9/10 Feb 24, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
