What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite fantastic production design and a solid cast, The Watch simply doesn't capture the wonder, whimsy, and world building of Terry Pratchett's beloved novels.

Ed Power Daily Telegraph (UK) The longer The Watch goes on the less resemblance it bears to Pratchett. Nonetheless, it has a quirky humour all of its own. And writer Simon Allen isn't afraid to have fun. Rated: 3/5 Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Plot? Sure, there's all kinds of skulduggery and even a dragon, but the setting and characters prove the greater gift. One for Pratchett fans and newcomers alike. Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Allison Keene Paste Magazine There are lots of moments that delighted me... under a lot of odd tonal choices. Still, the charm of the cast and the script's playful aspirations were enough to keep pushing through choppy editing and storytelling. Rated: 7.2/10 Jan 5, 2021 Full Review James Walton The Spectator The Watch is an obvious mess: clumsy in its storytelling and tonally all over the place, with an uneasy mix of solemnity and mostly feeble jokes. Aug 12, 2021 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media Messy sci-fi crime series features violence, alcohol. Rated: 3/5 Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Ani Bundel WETA There are flashes of a better series hiding within this show if the production wanted to find it. And perhaps it will. But right now, Discworld continues to wait for someone to figure out how to adapt it properly. Jan 15, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

alistair n Diabolical. The plot, the characters, the whole look of the thing have been ripped apart. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Audience Member Fans of T.P. will love this as much as I did! I'm PISSED there's no season 2!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review Gareth v Disappointing. The show desperately wants to be some sort of radical post-punk fantasy genre, but play's it way too safe to get near their intentions. A few funny gags here and there, and Dormer's performance in the lead are about the only positive takes in this production. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Please give us a season 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I think the costume design alone was enough to make this show unbearable. But what really got me was the fact that the only thing that made the characters close to the book characters, was their names. I was shocked by the absence of structure and plot given to the WoT series, but, this one couldn't even get me through the first scene without canceling my subscription to amc immediately and opening up a rotten Tomatoes account to flame this show to the best of my ability. The Watch is absolutely NOT The Night Watch. It is not Sam Vines on Screen. And more importantly this doesn't even feel like Discworld. Attempting a cyberpunk vibe in a world where the development of technology was impaired by the easy and free use of magic is as ridiculous as a motorcycle riding velociraptor. What makes it all worse is that somehow Hollywood is able to create a believable Dune movie with Batista and Zendeya in it, yet, the director of this flaming pile of excrement couldn't get this remotely entertaining with truly talented actors. And why does the Sam move around like he has Tourette Syndrome? Sorry not sorry, A true Terry Pratchett sweat Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member After seeing good Discworld TV productions like Hogfather, The Colour of Magic and Going Postal I actually thought that BBC would be able to make something at least as good ... This is utter crap ... Discworld in some weird punk style. Characters not even trying to be the characters we love from the books, and that's not even getting into the whole gender swap mess. If you are a fan of the books watch the old TV movies I mentioned above and give this garbage a pass. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
