What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite some memorably grizzled performances, True Detective's second season is florid to a fault and so unrelentingly grim that it becomes about as much fun as being stuck in L.A. traffic.

Molly Eichel Philadelphia Inquirer It's that the second season of True Detective feels ordinary while the first felt extraordinary... The ordinariness is a quality that weighs heavily on True Detective because its cop-show genre is all over TV. Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Chuck Barney San Jose Mercury News All of the lead actors dig deeply into their roles, with Farrell playing the wary, weary burnout to perfection, and Vaughn shifting into full-throttle intensity. Rated: 3/4 Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Melinda Houston Sydney Morning Herald While this is distinctly and unmistakably True Detective, it's also something of a reinvention: with the same sense of menace but less claustrophobic, less of a two-hander and with a broader, richer brief. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 13, 2017 Full Review Stephen Marche Esquire Magazine A strange combination of slick overproduction and basic incompetence. Oct 19, 2018 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk There's no problem with the acting talent or the pungently evocative cinematography, but what we need to know is whether this new series can carve itself a niche distinct from its rather-too-familiar antecedent. Rated: 3/5 Jul 24, 2018 Full Review Natalia Marcos El Pais (Spain) There are virtues in the second season of 'True Detective' that are forming an intimate and strong coherence between the two deliveries. SIBIRIAK . 10 for surviving I'm watching it for the second time. The first time I watched the 2 seasons in 2016 back then it was only 2 seasons. And it was disappointing back then without certainty what would it be like in the next seasons. And I had a theory that I might be preconditioned by the first season and maybe I watched it too fast. But now it was clear during the first 4 episodes - there is something wrong with it. But devil is in the details... Casting - 10! Acting -10! Plot and Idea - 10! Characters - 10! Music - 10. Cinematography - 5 (just gets the job done). Editing is 3 (worse only uncomfortable and crooked angles and shaky camera kinda films, In terms of storytelling the editing is very bad.) Script - 3 (worse is only unnatural dialogs kinda films). So clearly there is something wrong with the storytelling. The idea of these three lost souls is so beautiful. But then you have these long dialogs with so many words that don't need to be said. In police stations and headquarters. Every character is paraphrasing everything that is obvious even for those who is cooking while watching it. Lack of unveiling the main plot. And extremely unsatisfying abandonment of the mysterious way of the death in the beginning. So many interesting roads this storyline could take us. But this story material was left out there dead the same way as the victim in the first episode. The whole thing reeks of deadline-pushing and screen-time-stuffing. After the 4th episode I read a couple of articles. Turns out there was a problem with creative differences between Pizzolatto and Fukunaga who directed the first season. Besides that we were given a hint from the President of Programming at HBO Michael Lombardo about how sometimes pushing a team with deadlines leads to a failure. So what changes in the second half? Finally they got rid of this useless mob dialogs. We clearly see a bigger dive into the characters. We clearly can see shorter editing and storytelling framing. And there is another narrative is unveiling. The kids. There is a question is hanging in the air (it's obvious thanks to editing as well) "what do we leave for the kids?" when each character is shown in separate scenes with kids or taking about the kids or a family. And what really happened? Let's google again. And what do we see here? " he quietly has enlisted a friend and fellow novelist, Scott Lasser, to help him break stories for the second half of season two" - Hollywood Reporter says. Well, now everything is clear. And I'm gonna enjoy the rest of the season. That takes ball to ask for help. And that is why I'm giving it a 10. Not many shows survived like this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Paul S I don't know where they went wrong with this season. It seems like they wanted to put as many stars in it as they could rather than develop an intriguing and complex story. Overall it just wasn't good, and sometimes it was just plain aggravating to watch. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Audience Member Pathetic. Tone deaf to what the audience wants and what made season 1 great. Spent more time showing sex parties then developing characters. Then making the decision to just kill everyone is so sloppy and shows no creative ability. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Daniel J Very bad, made worse by the fact that is follows up something that is so amazing. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Jimmy J Not as bad as all are saying, just no where near the first Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review John Y Its hard to follow up on Season 1. This season had decent characters, an OK story, and solid acting. But this is closer to Law and Order than the first season. Its worth a watch but no great shakes.
