When their dad takes a job in Japan, wild Holly ends up bunking with her conservative older sister, Valerie, in New York City. Just when Val thinks she's got everything under control, Holly's zest to be a part of her big sister's cool life and her knack for getting into trouble turns Val's neatly regimented world upside down. As you'd expect from two young women living together, romantic relationships play a large role in the show's later seasons. Val does PR work for most of the series before opening her own bakery, while Holly works a series of part-time jobs throughout the show.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Amanda Bynes and Jennie Garth make for charming leads, but What I Like About You takes far too many detours into obnoxious slapstick comedy.

Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic Presumably what we're supposed to like is teen star Amanda Bynes... But she comes off so bratty that it's hard to. Feb 10, 2021 Full Review David Bianculli New York Daily News When the WB names a new sitcom "What I Like About You," it's begging for the obvious and accurate, one-word rejoinder review: Nothing. Rated: 0.5/4 Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Michael Speier Variety [Amanda] Bynes makes the leap to primetime with aplomb, and the result should be a solid run for an undemanding series that goes down easy. Mar 31, 2020 Full Review Glenn Garvin Miami Herald With a charming and funny cast, there's lots to like about What I Like About You. Feb 9, 2021 Full Review Roger Catlin Hartford Courant It's harmless enough fun, punched up by bold stabs at slapstick. Mar 31, 2020 Full Review Bernadette Adams Davis PopMatters For the moment, the show depends on [Amanda] Bynes' saucy and sharp one-liners, as well as her knack for physical comedy, for the big laughs.
