What to Know

Critics Consensus

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Wonder Man, turning in a sly performance alongside an equally wonderful Ben Kingsley in this low-stakes superhero fare that boasts high-hearted personal drama as its winning factor.

Audience Says

Wonder Man finds alchemy in its leading men, who deliver a refreshingly human story with greater emotional power than straight up kicks -- and it’s all the stronger for it.

A satire about struggling actors and the ludicrous Hollywood inequality they’re trying to get around doesn’t sound like a particularly original idea, but when you plug it into the dour world of Marvel superheroes it’s actually a welcome change of pace. Go to Full Review

The actors’ chemistry and undeniable bromance is a great reason to watch, but this is also an entertaining and low-stakes story that doesn’t require mass MCU viewing or knowledge to fully enjoy. Go to Full Review

It’s a different kind of Marvel epic. Special effects take a backseat to laughs as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley spoof egomaniac actors who learn it’s better to stop chasing fame and be in it for the love of the game. Go to Full Review

The chemistry between the two actors carries you along. They’re my second-favorite odd couple right now, after Dunk and Egg on HBO Max’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Go to Full Review

Though it falters as a comics adaptation, it succeeds as a worthy and unique experiment in dialogue-driven, chemistry-fueled character study. Go to Full Review

He avoids mythologizing the character; instead, he humanizes him. It’s a performance that understands heroism as something accidental and uneasy, rather than ordained. Go to Full Review

Jazzmin H. @jazzminbree 5h I’m always surprised when Marvel puts together a television show or even movie where it feels modern or somewhat feels like it’s outside of the Marvel world. And this one does that well. Maybe it’s the dirty streets of LA or the odd dynamic but charming relationship of the two main characters or the tones/styles is relative to Thunderbolts or Deadpool vs Wolverine or whatever that one is called; but it’s very enjoyable. The script is delightful. The character struggle is real and you want to root for him. The supporting character has his own struggle and you root for him to do the right thing or really what is the right thing. Lots of shenanigans. Comedy is drives this action packed “superhero” television show. I would watch again. And probably will. See more Karen S. @Karen511 8h Best series Marvel’s ever done! The acting is top-notch, as is the writing; funny, charming, but also a lot of serious moments & genuine pathos that make the characters very relatable & very human; the show actually takes the time to develop the characters so we get to know them & sympathize with their struggles first, especially Simon, instead of just throwing them immediately into another formulaic “here’s their super-powers & now here’s endless action-scenes fighting the bad guys in CGI” tropes like too many superhero films/shows can become. Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery has been one of my all-time fave MCU characters since Iron Man 3 & it’s great to see him back (& so obviously having fun with the role!) since he’s more than just comic relief now, given a lot more depth & pathos with a nice redemption-arc (tho he’s still also very funny!😂) & his friendship/mentor-role with Simon Williams has such genuine chemistry! Great meta-commentary on Hollywood & the acting craft itself too. See more Aye E @RT43717499 15h I'm not into superhero stuff, but I've been hearing good things about this and I really like the actor in the lead after seeing him on some late-night shows. Luckily this came to Hulu, so I could check it out. I'm so glad I did! I rarely enjoy shows like this but the lead is incredibly compelling, Ben Kingsley is perfect. It's nice to watch a show where I care about the characters and the narrative logic is consistent. Plus the music in this is just a chef's kiss. See more Kevin O. @kfokeefe13 2d Both lead actors were so good. Fantastic show - we hope there’s a second season! Great to see Marvel take a risk and do something unique - it was very well executed See more Tracy F. @Witten 2d Just a series of a struggling actor. Like the studio doesn’t want to spend money on it. Actors are good but story lacks See more Tennessee1987 T @Tennessee1987 6d Although I appreciated the exposition exploring the work that goes into a production (which is arguably the ONLY positive), overall It was a flop for me. The music was boring, the comedy was stale, & I don't see the importance in changing the lead character's culture to haitian. So because it's fictional, race doesn't matter, but cultural identity does? Disclosing the cultural identity of real life actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's father did not benefit nor move the story forward. (Intended to be a plot device, but comes off more like filler..a party occurs, but there isn't affect to how the character moves throughout the story, he never even speaks Creole.) If it isn't pivotal to the telling of the story, then why are we talking about it, "show the audience, don't tell". I shouldn't have to go read a blog as to why the change was made, keep your excuses for your poor storytelling. It also felt like there were no black writers in the writer's room.
