French-Canadian film director Daniel Roby is best known for his ambitious Quebec-centric historical dramas "Funkytown" (2011) and "Louis Cyr: L'homme le plus fort du monde" (2013). Roby began his career as a cinematographer, with work on short films and television shows. After helming his own dramatic short in 2003, Roby got the green light for his feature debut, "White Skin" (2004), an acclaimed French-language vampire movie. It took Roby seven years to unveil his follow-up, "Funkytown," a sprawling drama about the disco era in Montreal. Two years later, he garnered even more attention in his hometown for "Louis Cyr," a reverent look at the real-life 19th-century strongman, with the movie cementing his status as a Canadian filmmaker particularly adept at recreating various bygone eras on screen.
